Work Location Los Alamos National Laboratory - Los Alamos, NM Employment Type Full-Time / Onsite Clearance Type DOE Q Clearance (Position will be cleared to this level) Job Summary / Overview Omega Technical Services is seeking Nuclear & Hazardous Materials Technicians III or IV for the Nuclear Materials and TRU Waste Shipping (NPI-7) group at the Los Alamos National Laboratory in Los Alamos, NM. NPI-7 is extremely busy providing the safe, efficient and compliant shipping of all radioactive and hazardous materials generated at the TA-55 Plutonium Facility, the Chemistry and Metallurgy Research (CMR) building, the TA-50 Radioactive Liquid Waste Treatment Facility (RLWTF), the Radiological Laboratory Utility Office Building (RLUOB), the Transuranic Waste Facility (TWF) and the Radioassay and Nondestructive Testing Facility (RANT). This position involves performing work both inside and outside of buildings in varying weather conditions. Nuclear & Hazardous Materials Technician 3
The Nuclear & Hazardous Materials Technician 3 will interface with teams within the division and with other groups within TA-55 and the Laboratory. The selected candidate will primarily support activities such as the handling, packaging, and documenting hazardous and radioactive material; operating mechanical lifting equipment such as gantry/bridge cranes and forklifts; managing RCRA storage areas; and ensuring all results, materials, processes and final products meet quality specifications and are completed according to the established requirements.
Nuclear & Hazardous Materials Technician 4
In addition to what is outlined at the lower level, the Nuclear & Hazardous Material Technician 4 will work directly with various organizations to manage TRU/TRU hazardous waste disposition activities throughout TA-55. Specific duties may include, but are not necessarily limited to, handling drums and/or other containers of waste, lift, and document hazardous and radioactive waste exhibiting chemical and radiological hazards in accordance with written work instructions, package and handle fissile material to include, but not limited to, staging per criticality safety limits, operate mechanical lifting equipment to include electric and diesel powered forklifts and drum handlers, manage RCRA waste storage areas including knowledge of chemical storage, segregation, and handling requirements, contribute to Integrated Work Documents, Detailed Operating Procedures, or other work planning documents, perform upkeep and maintenance of records reflecting storage area, inventory and inspections, waste profiles, disposal requests, shipping paperwork, and waste characterization information, foster a mutually respectful work environment that is free from discrimination and harassment and follow established procedures for routine work.
Qualifications
MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS
- Problem Solving:Demonstrated experience in recognizing technical problems, and applying analysis and testing, to identify suitable solutions and effectively document and communicate results.
- Independent Judgement:Demonstrated experience performing work and prioritizing tasks with nominal supervision, as well as contributing to a team in a multi-disciplinary environment.
- Skills/Expertise:Demonstrated experience in proper use of personnel protective equipment including air purifying respirators.
- Customer Service:Demonstrated success in providing good customer service.
- DOE:DOE Order 426.2 requires high school diploma.
Education/Experience for Nuclear & Hazardous Materials Tec 3:Position requires an Associate's Degree and 3 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
Additional Job Requirements for Nuclear & Hazardous Materials Tec 4:
- Professional Level Experience:Knowledge and experience performing PIC duties for TRU operations and knowledge of and experience with handling and/or transporting solid, hazardous, radioactive, and/or mixed wastes
- Regulations/Compliance:Knowledge of applicable local, state, and federal laws and regulations relating to the handling of solid, liquid, hazardous, radioactive, and/or mixed wastes; understanding of work hazards, safety practices, operating configurations, and lock-out/tag-out policies and procedures; ability to understand inspection and/or characterization data on waste containers.
- Policy/Procedures:Knowledge of the Laboratory's waste handling policies, practices, and procedures; demonstrated experience managing RCRA waste storage areas including knowledge of chemical storage, segregation, and handling requirements; knowledge and experience with lock out tag out policies and procedures; skill in the preparation of waste handling reports.
- Training/Certifications:Ability to maintain relevant certification and training requirements for the performance of their duties (e.g., HRP, FMH, etc).
- DOE:DOE Order 426.2 requires high school diploma.
Education:Position requires an Associate's Degree and 5 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
At this level a minimum of 2 years previous experience gained thorough training in a specific field of hazardous material or waste management would be expected. DESIRED QUALIFICATONS
- Skills/Expertise:Experience and participation in audits of material and/or management activities. The ability to obtain and maintain certification as a forklift and incidental crane operator.
- Regulations:Knowledge of one or more of the following: Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) 49 Parts 105-180; DOE O 460.1B Packaging and Transportation Safety; P151-1 LANL Packaging and Transportation Program Procedure. Demonstrated experience managing RCRA waste storage areas including knowledge of chemical storage, segregation, and handling requirements
- Clearance:Active Q clearance, and Human Reliability Program (HRP) Certification.
Desired Skillsfor Nuclear & Hazardous Materials Tec 4
Training/Certifications:Radworker, HAZWOPER, RCRA certification, and the ability to obtain certification as a forklift and/or forklift proficiency instructor.
