Job Summary

The Assistant Director of Accessible Housing and Dining is responsible for the day-to-day operations and outcomes of implementing accommodations and modified arrangements to students (undergraduate, graduate, and students with families) and conference guests living and dining with Student Housing and Dining Services (SHDS). Supervises two Residential Accessibility Specialists and leads work for one Dining Services dietitian. Provides specialized housing and dining accessibility training to direct reports and department to ensure compliance and minimize risk to the University. Responsible for distributing 1800+ accommodation and modified arrangement cases annually to staff based on the assessment of staff expertise level and individual workload. Accountable for developing modified arrangement request procedures, developing case documentation standards, and implementing interactive process expectations that ensure compliance. Provides high level analysis, consultation, and decision making for requests and cases, often involving complex and sensitive issues related to physical and mental health conditions and identity-based housing needs. Works in collaboration with the Student Disability Center (SDC) to consult and analyze housing and dining requests. Acts as the department's subject matter expert in matters pertaining to disabilities and compliance with federal, state, and local laws, and University of California policies. Gathers data from multiple sources to evaluate student accessibility trends and presents data findings to senior leadership.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and/or certification if required of the position

  • Bachelor's Degree in educational medical administration, psychology, special education, counseling, rehabilitation counseling, human resources, disability law, or related field; experience in providing services to students or people with disabilities; or equivalent combination of experience and education.
  • Experience with interpersonal communication skills to clearly and effectively interact in person, via email, and over zoom/telephone with individuals of varying backgrounds and perspectives (students, other university staff, and government/outside agencies). This includes experience interpreting, analyzing, and communicating policies and guidelines.
  • Experience in handling difficult situations, analyzing complex problems, making sound decisions, and implementing effective solutions, often under pressure.
  • Experience recruiting, selecting, training, supervising, and evaluating employees.
  • Experience developing, implementing, and maintaining a detailed, effective recordkeeping system and maintaining confidentiality of sensitive medical and educational records and communications. Experience with project management to oversee day-to-day operations: determine competing workload priorities without specific direction, establish and effectively meet deadlines, goals and objectives in a busy environment; follow-through to successful completion.
  • Experience providing specialized training and expert guidance to staff and campus partners.
  • Knowledge of and experience with pertinent federal and state laws and regulations (e.g., Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, California Fair Employment and Housing Act) as applicable to the provision of accommodations to individuals with disabilities.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working with students with disabilities in higher education, particularly with on campus student housing and dining accommodations and understanding of the role of student support services. Familiarity with case law, court rulings, current practices and trends/developments in the field of student housing and students with disabilities services in higher education.
  • Experience in relevant software applications, such as student information systems, case management software, and data analysis tools.
  • Knowledge of the impact of medical conditions (including physical, hearing, visual, and psychological disabilities) on life activities, and experience with determining and implementing appropriate accommodations.

Student Housing and Dining Services (SHDS) is a self-supporting auxiliary that provides housing and dining services to approximately 15,000 undergraduate, graduate, and students with families who live in on-campus residential facilities (university owner/managed and Public-Private-Partnerships), as well as providing residential, retail and catering dining services for the campus community. The Business Operations and Services unit of Student Housing and Dining Services provides students and summer conference guests university home options through seamless operational processes and exemplary service. Over 15,000 student contracts and leases for family and graduate apartments, single undergraduate apartments, and residence hall rooms are managed, with an annual revenue budget of $140+ million dollars. Residence Halls are used to accommodate conference housing guests during the summer, to maximize income and provide extended stay opportunities for potential students and guests of UC Davis programs.

Work Environment
