What to Expect

Tesla is seeking a highly skilled and motivated Automation and Equipment Manufacturing Engineer to lead the design, implementation, and sustainment of automated material handling systems and equipment controls for new and existing factories. Based on Megafactory Lathrop, this role will operate in a fast-paced, demanding environment as part of a smart, agile, and highly motivated team. The ideal candidate will drive ambitious projects, focusing on efficient and reliable material flow, advanced automation solutions, and continuous improvement of manufacturing systems and equipment.

What You'll Do
  • Lead the design, architecture, and implementation of automated material handling solutions and equipment controls, including automated storage systems (AS/RS), robotics, conveyors, automated guided vehicles (AGVs/AMRs), electric monorail systems, fixtures, and more. Develop solutions for material arrival at docks, delivery to line-side locations, transport between manufacturing lines, and buffer/storage systems
  • Program and debug structured text and ladder logic on multiple PLC platforms (Siemens TIA Portal, Omron Sysmac Studio, Allen-Bradley, Beckhoff). Create intuitive operator touchscreen interfaces (Siemens WinCC, Proface, Ignition) and SCADA dashboards. Develop robust programs for complex, multi-station machinery for processes like material pick-and-place, welding, testing, and transport
  • Sustain 24/7 production operations by responding to and resolving equipment breakdowns to minimize downtime. Lead equipment upgrades focusing on serviceability, reliability, and process capability. Drive continuous process optimization, detailed troubleshooting, and root cause analysis as a subject matter expert
  • Own projects from concept to installation and hand-over, managing timelines, budgets, and coordination with vendors, factory layout teams, construction, packaging, and production teams. Develop RFQs, technical specifications, and documentation. Manage electrical cabinet builds, field wiring, pneumatic and fluid plumbing
  • Design and implement control-reliable safety systems for safeguarding robots, gantries, conveyors, and other high-volume equipment, adhering to relevant codes and standards
  • Interface process and test equipment with Tesla MES and production quality databases using Python scripting and SQL. Investigate advanced technologies to optimize material handling and automation systems. Manage engineering projects with AGVs and integrate fleet equipment throughout factory areas
  • Provide mentorship to other engineers and stakeholders. Work collaboratively with design, product excellence, production operations, manufacturing engineering, process engineering, maintenance, and cross-functional teams to ensure safe, efficient production lines producing high-quality parts
  • Develop and maintain proper documentation for electrical equipment, procedures, maintenance routines, service bulletins, and equipment validation (calibration and qualification). Build training materials and ensure critical spare parts coverage to prevent extended downtime

What You'll Bring
  • Degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Mechatronics, Industrial, or Computer Engineering, or equivalent experience
  • 5+ years of practical experience in automated material handling, process equipment design, and control systems design/implementation (Siemens, Omron preferred). Experience in automotive or high-volume manufacturing is highly desired
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD, SolidWorks, CATIA, or similar modeling software; creating detailed electrical and fluid schematics in CAD (EPLAN preferred); Structured Text (IEC 61131-3) programming; HMI/GUI development (Proface, WinCC, Ignition); servo drive and VFD tuning; PLC programming, troubleshooting, and configuration; robot programming (Fanuc) and backup/restoration
  • Strong analytical skills to develop models for design and performance criteria. Ability to manage complex projects with high variation and uncertainty under intense time pressure
  • Familiarity with structured problem-solving methodologies (DMAIC, 8D, etc.) and SPC/OCAP development for equipment-related issues
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Ability to work in a close-knit team environment and collaborate across departments
  • Willingness to work days, afternoons, nights, and weekends as determined by project needs
  • A strong passion for automation equipment, design processes, and dynamic manufacturing systems
