Summary:

UNC Nash Interventional Radiology (IR) Charge Nurse plays a critical leadership role in ensuring the efficient and effective operation of the Interventional Radiology department. This position is responsible for overseeing daily workflows, coordinating patient care, supporting clinical staff, and ensuring adherence to established policies and procedures. As a pivotal member of the IR team, the Charge Nurse facilitates communication between multidisciplinary teams, monitors patient safety standards, and fosters a culture of excellence, assists with quality and regulatory standard adherence in patient care.

Responsibilities:

1. Operational Leadership and Staff Management:

  • Coordinate and oversee daily operations in the Interventional Radiology department to ensure efficient utilization of resources.
  • Assign nursing staff and support personnel to procedures based on patient needs and staff expertise.
  • Ensure timely starts for procedures and resolve issues that may cause delays.
  • Ensure that daily case volume is posted on the board; staffing to the volume and reduce staffing accordingly.
  • Provide feedback, assist with performance evaluations, and providing staff with real-time performance feedback accordingly.
  • Collaborate with interventional radiologists, anesthesiologists, hospitalists, transfer-in coordinators and other healthcare professionals as needed to optimize workflow.

2. Patient Care and Safety:

  • Ensure all patients receive high-quality, safe, and compassionate care throughout the patient experience.
  • Monitor compliance with infection control policies, sterile techniques, and safety protocols.
  • Rounds in rooms on team members throughout the day accordingly.
  • Act as a resource for complex or challenging patient cases, providing guidance and expertise.
  • Oversee accurate documentation of patient care in accordance with regulatory requirements. Performs chart audits as assigned.

3. Team Support and Supervision:

  • Serve as a mentor and leader for staff, fostering professional growth and development.
  • Provide real-time support and problem-solving assistance to staff during procedures.
  • Conduct pre- and post-shift briefings to ensure seamless communication and alignment among staff.
  • Address and escalate staffing or operational concerns to the Nurse Manager as needed.
  • Demonstrates the ability to delegate accordingly.

4. Continuous Improvement:

  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives, identifying areas for process enhancement and collaborating on solutions.
  • Monitor and evaluate performance metrics such as procedure start times, turnover times, and compliance with standards of care as evidenced by performing assigned practice/quality audits accordingly.
  • Support education and training programs to maintain staff competencies and promote evidence-based practices.

Other information:

Education Requirements:

  • Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing.
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred.

Licensure/Certification Requirements:

  • Current North Carolina Registered Nurse (RN) license.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certifications required.
  • CRN certification preferred or willingness to obtain within 1 year of being in the CN role.

Professional Experience Requirements:

  • Minimum of 3-4 years of clinical nursing experience.
  • Previous leadership or charge nurse experience preferred.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Strong clinical knowledge and expertise in Interventional Radiology nursing.
  • Excellent communication, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to foster teamwork and collaboration with the multidisciplinary team.
