Position Summary This position requires the full understanding and active participation in fulfilling the mission of Saddleback Medical Center. The employee shall support Saddleback Medical Center's strategic plan and participate in and advocate performance improvement/patient safety activities. The Pharmacy Quality Assurance (QA) Coordinator is a key position for quality assurance within the Medical Center and Department of Pharmacy. This Pharmacist acts as the Medication Safety Officer and is responsible for and leads the medication quality and safety programs. The Pharmacy QA Coordinator's areas of responsibility include high level sterile compounding compliance and the medication error reduction program. They collaborate within the Medical Center and other MemorialCare departments to identify improvements to medication-use systems, prevent patient harm, and develop of error prevention strategies. The Pharmacy QA Coordinator chairs the Medication Safety Committee and works closely with Pharmacy, Nursing, and Risk Management Leadership. The Pharmacy QA Coordinator is a key position in the Department of Pharmacy. This individual is responsible for a multitude of Pharmacy-related projects and programs. One of the main responsibilities of this individual is to coordinate non-sterile, sterile and hazardous drug programs. The Pharmacy QA Coordinator analyzes and adjusts workflow processes to improve and maintain compliance with applicable regulatory standards. They will work directly with Pharmacy Administration to develop and implement various projects. This position collaborates with other departments at the Medical Center and at the Health system level to develop and implement new strategies. The Pharmacy QA Coordinator oversees and provides education to Pharmacy Technicians, intern Pharmacists, student Pharmacists, and other ancillary personnel. In addition to promoting regulatory compliance, the Pharmacy QA Coordinator will participate on the Pharmacy, Therapeutics & Transfusion Committee and the Pharmacy management team. The Pharmacy QA Coordinator works with Pharmacy Administration to develop and/ or implement initiatives. These initiatives may include but are not limited to smart pump infusion drug library development and maintenance, narcotic handling compliance, and opioid stewardship. Essential Functions and Responsibilities of the Job * Serves as the person, or one of the persons, designated by the facility to be responsible and accountable for the performance and operation of the facility and personnel in the preparation of compounded sterile and non-sterile products. * Maintains regulatory readiness by ensuring the compliance with all applicable compounding regulations including but not limited to USP, cGMP, FDA regulations, CMS regulations, and California State Board of Pharmacy regulations. * Organizes the Medication Safety Committee, MERP Committee, and acts as Chair of the committee. * Collect, review, investigate, analyze, and trend medication safety events or issues including but not limited to medication errors, adverse drug reactions, and continuous quality improvement data. * Participate in and/ or lead efforts to improve medication errors, adverse drug events and reactions, near misses, policy reviews, medication use systems, product reviews, and patient safety to identify risk points and develop performance improvement initiatives and error reduction strategies. * Reviews best practices and conducts gap analyses to identify opportunities for proactive revision of medication use/protocols. * Ensures that the Department of Pharmacy provides pharmaceutical care in accordance with law and regulations. * Participates in education, research and other professional activities including but not limited to precepting pharmacy students and/or residents. * Ability to be at work and be on time. * Ability to follow company policies, procedures and directives. * Ability to interact in a positive and constructive manner. * Ability to prioritize and multitask. Essential Job Outcomes * Maintains regulatory readiness by ensuring compliance with all applicable compounding regulations. * Performs applicable staff certifications and quality assurance reviews of the medication use process and/ or compounding practices. * Manages the Medication Safety Committee and prepares all applicable documents and reports. * Optimizes the medication use process to mitigate or reduce medication errors or adverse drug events. * Ensures that the Department of Pharmacy provides pharmaceutical care (e.g., sterile compounding) in accordance with law and regulations. * Demonstrates leadership skills that positively contribute to the Medical Center. * Educates and trains students and new staff. * Other duties as assigned. *Placement in the pay range is based on multiple factors including, but not limited to, relevant years of experience and qualifications.
