Job Overview:

The Telemetry Technician oversees and interprets the cardiac monitor for arrhythmias and changes in heart rhythm,

The Telemetry Unit is a team-oriented unit that provides a wide variety of medical surgical and diagnostic services to a diverse cardiac population, i.e, congestive heart failure, coronary artery disease, respiratory compromise and dysrhythmias.

Qualifications:

Required

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent
  • Completion of a cardiovascular technology course or successful completion of a telemetry/monitor technician course
  • Must have the ability to examine heartbeat patterns, noting heartbeat irregularities in real time and ensuring the heart monitors are functioning correctly
  • Basic Life Support BLS through the American Heart Association

Preferred

  • At least one year of telemetry/monitoring work experience

Scheduling Requirements:

  • Day Shift

Essential Functions:

  • Promotes and implements the concept of patient and family centered care,
  • Promotes a compassionate and supportive environment
  • Observes and reports to the Registered Nurse the patient's response to intervention treatments,
  • Knows how to activate a code system,
  • Gives a report on cardiac rhythm to physicians and RN as requested.
  • Gives a report to the oncoming telemetry technician or relief RN,
  • Reports to the RN on all rhythm changes and physicians if available,
  • Consults with RN when in doubt of rhythm,
  • Communicates and records pertinent information to appropriate individuals,
  • Record vital signs and bedside glucose testing results,
  • Documents accurately and legibly on appropriate records,
  • Collects specimens; labels accurately and ensures delivery to the appropriate department
  • Prepares the patient for monitoring using proper techniques in electrode placement,
  • Removes and discontinues telemetry transmitter from patients being discharged or transferred
  • Cleans and disinfects equipment following procedures as assigned,
  • Orders all supplies needed from the storeroom and central supply,
  • Stocks all supplies in appropriate locations and reports all shortages to the charge nurse.
  • May work in areas where medications are stored,
  • This includes checking for expiration dates for kits, trays with meds, IV fluids, needles etc.
  • Rotating and stocking other supplies,
  • Maintains inventory of telemetry transmitters each shift,
  • Run, interpret and post EKG strips within 3 hours of the start of the shift,
  • Maintain the integrity of telemetry packs, wires, battery covers
  • Provides and maintains a safe environment and performs proper surveillance for the prevention of falls for patients at risk.
  • Identifies equipment problems and contacts appropriate departments for repair and replacement.
  • Attends meetings and departmental programs as requested,
  • Participates in inter-and intra-departmental activities,
  • Maintains adequate coverage of monitors at all times,
  • Maintains alarms on at all times,
  • Completes all monitoring activities by the end of the shift,
  • Completes documentation on telemetry mount sheets each shift,
  • Makes rounds to verify patient status every two hours and PRN
  • Greets and assists physicians, hospital staff, patients and visitors with questions,
  • Answers phone in a courteous manner
  • Perform other duties as directed
