Performs a variety of duties including set up and maintenance of equipment, order and stock supplies, patient care and related duties.

I. Major Responsibilities:

1. Assists in complex surgeries such as cardiac surgery, transplant- particularly liver transplant, trauma, vascular surgeries, and lumbar drain placement for complex aortic surgeries.
2. Assists in the application of various types of monitors and equipment such as 3 and 5 lead ECG, NIBP, pulse oximetry, defibrillators, external pacemakers, thromboelastographic, rapid infusion system, etc. Places and removes electrocardiograph leads and blood pressure cuff. Assists staff with airway management as directed. Assists in the positioning of patients as required.
3. Places IV solutions in blood/fluid warmer according to standard procedure. Sets up warming devices as required. Prepares transducer IV and flush system for arterial pressure and Swan Ganz monitoring lines. Sets up malignant hyperthermia machine in designated rooms. Removes all triggering agents. Tests equipment and lines for proper operation and leaks. Assists in insertion of invasive monitoring such as Swan Catheters, Continuous Cardiac Output Catheters, etc.
4. Performs quality assurance tests on Thromboesastogram and HMS Plus equipment.
5. Assists in transportation of patients. Observes monitoring equipment to ensure equipment connections. Reports discrepancies to physicians or others.
6. Observes patients (physical appearance, attitude, etc.) and alerts physician or others to observations.
7. Draws arterial, venous, mixed venous samples from existing invasive monitoring lines and finger stick blood samples. Performs appropriate tests and reports test results to Anesthetist or others. Performs quality assurance tests on equipment such as glucometer, Hemo Q, defibrillators, etc. Record results.
8. May conduct daily operation, calibration and maintenance of blood gas analyzers and other anesthesia equipment. Performs laboratory quality control per established standards. Participates in laboratory surveys as required. Maintains inventory of laboratory supplies.
9. Sets up intravenous solutions for surgical cases according to standard procedure.
10. Responds to and assists in emergency situations. Assists with blood and fluid resuscitation and difficult intribution as directed. Retrieves and sets up defibrillator. Ensures availability of medications.
11. Provides on-call coverage for nights, weekends, and holidays.
12. Responsible for ICU to OR, and OR to ICU transfers that may require Anesthesia Tech support.
13. Cover off-site procedural locations (non-OR anesthesia).
14. Troubleshoots defectives equipment. Performs minor repairs. Reports defective equipment to the Biomedical Engineering and follows-up with supervisor or others as required. Checks oxygen, nitrous oxide and air tanks. Replaces as required.
15. Orders and maintains supplies. Follows up on back orders. Monitors supplies and medications for expiration date.
16. Maintains stock for supply and monitoring carts according to standard procedure. Decontaminates carts as required. Washes and sterilizes reusable equipment and anesthetic machine as required. Restocks and places clean equipment in rooms as required.

II. Position Qualifications:

License/Certification/Education:

Required:
1. Equivalent to high school plus additional specialized training.

Experience/Skills:

Required:
1. Minimum of one year of experience working in an academic/teaching hospital.
2. Knowledge of a variety of patient care and anesthesia procedures.
3. Three to twelve months experience.

Unless certification, licensure or registration is required, an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed in this description may be substituted for the above requirements.

Department-specific competencies and their measurements will be developed and maintained in the individual departments. The competencies will be maintained and attached to the departmental job description.Responsible managers will review competencies with position incumbents.

III. Physical Demands and Environmental Conditions:

Work is considered medium. Position requires work indoors in a patient care environment.

  • On-Call Requirement:Yes, participation in a rotating on-call schedule is required.
  • Weekend Requirement:Yes, participation in a rotating weekend work/call schedule is required.
  • Holiday Requirement:Yes, participation in a rotating holiday schedule is required.
  • Rotation Details:The frequency of on-call, weekend, and holiday rotations is determined by departmental staffing levels and operational needs. For example, the on-call/weekend rotation is shared among the technical staff in the department; if there are five (5) technicians, the rotation would be approximately every fifth on-call period/weekend. This frequency is subject to change based on factors including, but not limited to, staffing changes and patient care demands. Further details regarding current scheduling practices will be provided during the interview process.
  • May be required to travel between campuses.
