About the College/Unit/Department
The University of Georgia's Skidaway Institute of Oceanography (SkIO) is a multidisciplinary research and training institution located on a 700-acre campus on Skidaway Island. The Institute's primary goals are to further understanding of marine and environmental sciences, conduct leading edge research on marine and coastal systems, and train tomorrow's scientists. Our campus is also a host to Georgia Southern University's Applied Coastal Research Lab, NOAA Gray's Reef National Marine Sanctuary, The University of Georgia's Marine Education Center and Aquarium, and The Nature Conservancy. Skidaway Institute of Oceanography is also home to the Research Vessel (R/V) Savannah. The R/V Savannah is owned and operated by the Institute and is a member of the University National Oceanographic Laboratory System ( UNOLS) and Academic Research Fleet ( ARF).

High school diploma or equivalent

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of basic commands for AUV operation
  • Masters degree in Marine Sciences, Engineering, Physical Sciences, or a related field
  • Experience operating HF radar systems and/or autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs)

Position Summary
This position will work with a Principal Investigator to conduct field research in physical oceanography. Responsibilities will include operation and maintenance of high frequency (HF) radar systems,as well as periodic assistance with deployment/retrieval/software usage of other instrumentation, including but not limited to autonomous underwater vehicles ( AUV) operations, ADCPs, CTDs, and acoustic release systems.

This position has a limited-term appointment term which is 1-year grant-funded. The position may be extended beyond the initial term, contingent upon continued funding.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies

  • Bachelor's degree in Marine Sciences, Engineering, Physical Sciences, or a related field.
  • Knowledge of basic principles of remotely sensed measurements in the coastal ocean (e.g., HF radar or equivalent applications)
  • Knowledge of basic electronics, circuits, and their operation
  • Installation and maintenance of HF radar systems (e.g., lifting heavy objects, trench hardware, outdoor work)
  • Troubleshooting and repair of electronics, communications, and other instrument components
  • Troubleshoot communications components and internet data transfer difficulties
  • Planning and organization skills
  • Understand and interpret scientific information (data and technical manuals) for application to real systems
  • Sea-going activities related to coastal oceanographic data collection and mooring deployment/recovery
