Mission Contribution: The Accountant ensures accurate financial record-keeping and compliance with GAAP, playing a critical role in the financial operations of the retail business segment. This position supports Goodwill's mission by safeguarding assets, driving financial efficiency, and providing strategic financial guidance.

Summary: The Accountant manages the financial activities of the grocery and donated goods business segment, including financial analysis, reporting, and compliance with GAAP and corporate policies. This role supports business segment leadership by providing accurate financial insights, guiding short- and long-term growth strategies, and ensuring the integrity of financial reporting to optimize performance and profitability.

Essential Functions:


  1. Manages daily operations of the grocery and donated goods business segment, overseeing financial activities and ensuring compliance with GAAP.
  2. Conducts daily reconciliations of Market and donated goods reports to bank deposits, ensuring accuracy and compliance.
  3. Reviews Market and donated goods financials during the monthly close process, researching and communicating unexpected or unusual variances. Participates in month-end review discussions with senior management.
  4. Ensures financial systems and procedures comply with GAAP and corporate policies, safeguarding the integrity of financial reporting.
  5. Analyzes operating results to identify and recommend opportunities for improving profitability and cash flow.
  6. Implements financial and business strategic plans to enhance organizational efficiency and growth.
  7. Establishes and maintains strong financial systems to drive performance improvements and reduce inefficiencies.
  8. Collaborates with senior management in budget preparation and ongoing financial forecasting.
  9. Prepares accurate operational and financial reports by gathering, analyzing, and summarizing key data and trends.
  10. Compiles and distributes daily, weekly, and monthly financial reports as required.
  11. Researches and resolves accounting and financial inquiries, effectively interpreting data and communicating findings.
  12. Exhibit decision-making and behavior aligned with Goodwill's Core Values: Serve, Mentor, Include, Lead, and Excel.
  13. Participate in training sessions, meetings, and company-related events as required.
  14. Perform other duties as assigned by management.
  15. Adhere to all Goodwill policies and procedures.

Minimum Qualifications:


  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to read, analyze, and interpret complex accounting documents, financial reports, and operational materials.
  • Capable of responding professionally and effectively to sensitive inquiries or complaints, ensuring clarity and adherence to policies.
  • Proficiency in analyzing large data sets and developing comprehensive financial models to support strategic decision-making.
  • Advanced mathematical skills, including the ability to apply statistical and analytical methods such as variance analysis and forecasting to evaluate business performance.
  • Strong problem-solving and reasoning abilities, with the capacity to apply logical thinking to a broad range of financial and operational challenges.
  • Skilled in interpreting and working with nonverbal symbols, including formulas, scientific equations, and graphs, to analyze abstract and concrete financial variables effectively.
  • Proficiency in financial software is preferred.

Required Certificates, Licenses, Registrations, Experience:


  • Bachelor's Degree (BA or BS) in Accounting, Finance, or a related field is required.
  • A minimum of three to five years of experience in accounting, financial reporting, variance analysis, and budgeting is required.
  • Must be able to successfully complete any assigned Goodwill training within the required timeframe upon employment.

Special Requirements:


  • Personal vehicle usage is required for this position, including a reliable vehicle, a valid driver's license, and the ability to provide proof of insurance for driving on company business.
  • An acceptable motor vehicle record, based on Goodwill guidelines, is required for driving a personal or company vehicle.
  • Must provide a cell phone for specified work responsibilities, including the use of a phone-based application for authentication.
  • A high-speed, reliable broadband internet connection is required for job functions.
  • Must successfully complete a state background investigation and drug screen.
  • Flexibility in work hours may be required during month-end and year-end closing periods.
