Position Summary

DEFINITION
Under supervision of the appropriate administrator, this position will plan, schedule, execute, coordinate, and assess operation of the MESA/STEM Academic Success Center and its Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Learning Laboratory in support of the college's STEM programs. This position will also collaborate with the Mathematics, Engineering, Science Achievement (MESA) program and other campus units; values and promotes the mission and vision of the college.

CLASS CHARACTERISTICS
Under minimal supervision, this is a paraprofessional position expected to assume the overall and ensure the operation of the department's learning laboratory, which provides supplemental instruction to students. The incumbent is required to perform at a skilled level with a considerable degree of independence in the learning laboratory and to work collaboratively with instructors and tutors to design, procure, and develop learning materials. Incumbents may be expected to operate the laboratory alone for extended time periods throughout the day.


Essential Functions and Qualifications

  1. Oversees the day-to-day activities of the STEM Learning Laboratory; sets and monitors goals regarding facility usage and student achievement.
  2. Assists in the hiring, training, oversight, and assessment of tutors.
  3. Schedules tutoring, organized study groups, and group review sessions within the MESA, STEM Academic Success Center; schedules students for individual tutorial sessions at the request of counselors or the dean, academic affairs.
  4. Monitors the budget and processes payroll documents for MESA/STEM tutors; provides support to grant development teams to secure increased funding for STEM instruction and student support services.
  5. Assists Life and Physical Sciences (LPS) and mathematics department instructors in the design and development of learning materials; proctors quizzes and exams and assigns embedded tutors as requested by LPS and mathematics faculty and MESA program director.
  6. Assists LPS and mathematics department instructors in scheduling their weekly office hours to be held in the MESA/STEM Academic Success Center, as requested.
  7. Attends department meetings and advocates with faculty for utilization of the MESA/STEM Academic Success Center and its programs; collaborates with faculty to provide workshops to meet student needs.
  8. Tutors and assists students on an individual basis; diagnoses deficient knowledge and skill areas, develops intervention strategies, and prescribes practice worksheets and/or assignments. This may include being assigned as an embedded tutor for sections that a student worker tutor does not meet qualifications for.
  9. Provides support to the STEM Counselor as needed in the center or at outreach events.
  10. Orders materials and supplies for the STEM Learning Laboratory.
  11. Establishes, updates, and analyzes STEM Learning Laboratory utilization goals, student attendance, and satisfaction survey feedback. Provides this information to faculty and administrators upon request.
  12. Develops posters, handouts, and other informational materials about the MESA/STEM Academic Success Center and its services.
  13. Creates and maintains MESA/STEM Academic Success Center and affiliated college webpages. This includes the creation and maintenance of online registration forms for events hosted/promoted by the MESA/STEM Academic Success Center.
  14. Supports outreach at campus events on behalf of STEM education with special focus on first generation and underrepresented students.
  15. Collaborates with the Math Center, Learning Assistance Program, and Tutorial/Open Access Lab to promote common training and standards for tutors across the college.
  16. Assists STEM-related student clubs in scheduling their meeting times to be held within the MESA/STEM Academic Success Center.
  17. Chaperones events and field trips hosted by the MESA/STEM Academic Success Center as assigned.
  18. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Knowledge of:
  • College-level STEM curricula germane to Learning Laboratory assignment;
  • Contemporary tutorial techniques for assisting students in multiple STEM disciplines and with varied learning abilities;
  • California Education Code, Title 5, and other regulations related to student support services;
  • Educational needs of community college students, especially first-generation and underrepresented students;
  • Operation of computer software programs specific to community colleges including Microsoft Office suite;
  • Social media, webpage design, and html;
  • Office procedures, filing, and professional correspondence and report writing;
  • Bilingual English/Spanish desired, but not required.

Demonstrates Ability to:
  • Perform at a baccalaureate level in the assigned academic field;
  • Assess student achievement and diagnose learning challenges;
  • Tutor students effectively;
  • Learn laboratory and department operation procedures and policies;
  • Interpret, and apply department and college policies and procedures relating to the Learning Laboratory;
  • Analyze situations accurately and make judgments on laboratory matters without immediate supervision;
  • Provide guidance to students on the availability and uses of instructional materials and equipment;
  • Understand and carry out oral and written directions;
  • Develop and maintain cooperative relationships with students, faculty, and staff on campus and at other community colleges, local universities, and high school areas.

Working Conditions:
  • Duties are primarily performed in an office environment, at a desk or at a computer.
  • The incumbent will experience interruptions while performing normal duties during the regular workday.
  • The incumbent will have contact, in person, by email, through video conferencing or on the telephone, with staff, faculty and the general public.

Physical Demands:
  • Typically may sit for extended periods of time.
  • Operates a computer.
  • Communicates over the telephone, by email and in person.
  • Regularly lifts, carries and/or moves objects weighing up to 10 pounds.

Special Qualification:
A sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds of staff and students and to staff and students with disabilities.

Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience:
A bachelor's degree in a science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) discipline with one year's experience in tutoring at least one STEM discipline.


Additional Information

The desired start date is December 2025. This is a part-time, 19.5-hour, classified, 11-month position. This position is contingent on continued funding.

Work Schedule: Monday, 2:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, 12:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m., and Thursday, 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.
