Department Description

The UCSF Center for Tuberculosis (CTB) is a multidisciplinary hub of TB experts dedicated to accelerating progress toward global TB elimination and to training the next generation of TB scientists. Since its launch in 2019, CTB has united more than 45 faculty investigators-spanning immunology, data sciences, epidemiology, pharmacology, diagnostics, therapeutics, biostatistics, implementation, and policy-across UCSF and its partners. As the operational hub of the NIH P30-funded core center grant, UC Tuberculosis Research Advancement Center, CTB offers a scientific home for the TB research enterprise at UCSF and beyond. Through cooperative scholarship, technical training, mentorship, clinical excellence, advocacy, and a collaborative spirit, CTB-affiliated faculty, fellows, and staff advance health worldwide and improve the lives of TB-affected communities through transformative research and practice.

UCSF, Department of Pediatrics, Infectious Diseases & Global Health Division is involved in a variety of innovative research activities, including outcomes research, translational immunology, basic research in molecular pathogenesis and host-defense, as well as global health research in low-resource countries. We also have long-standing collaborations with scientists in other clinical and basic science departments at UCSF. The research is conducted on many aspects of chlamydial infections: the molecular epidemiology and pathogenesis of chlamydial STDs around the world, including Ecuadorian, Nepali and Vietnamese populations. The research on chlamydial STDs among adolescents will help to design appropriate interventions in this population. There is a collaboration with different biotech companies to develop a vaccine to prevent and ameliorate chlamydial related STDs among all age groups, to develop leading edge nanotechnology to study chlamydial disease pathogenesis, and to develop a readily deployable, cost effect and rapid-point-of-care test that can be used to screen for chlamydial infections not just in hospitals and clinical labs in developed countries but globally in inner city and rural clinics, and field sites worldwide.
