Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

The Principal Design Engineer is a technical leader within Avanos' New Product Development organization, responsible for driving the design and development of innovative medical devices from concept through commercialization. This role combines deep technical expertise, cross-functional leadership, and a strong understanding of design controls, risk management, and human factors to deliver safe, reliable, and cost-effective products.

The Principal Engineer serves as a subject matter expert and mentor to other engineers, ensure robust design execution consistent with Avanos' product development process (PDP) and quality process and procedures.

Key Responsibilities:




  • Lead design and development of complex medical devices through all phases of the PDP.
  • Define product architecture, key design inputs, and system requirements in collaboration with systems, quality, regulatory, clinical teams, and project head.
  • Develop and review detailed design documentation including CAD models, drawings, specifications, and tolerance analyses.
  • Apply robust engineering principles (mechanical, electromechanical, fluidics, materials, etc.) to develop and refine product designs.
  • Drive design reviews, DFMEA, and risk analyses to ensure robust product performance and compliance with applicable standards.
  • Collaborate closely with manufacturing, Technical Operations, and suppliers to optimize design for manufacturability, assembly, reliability, and cost.
  • Provide technical leadership and mentoring for design engineers and project teams, fostering a culture of technical rigor and innovation.
  • Contribute to IP generation and patent filings.
  • Support pre- and formal design verification builds.
  • Represent R&D in cross-functional design reviews.



Your qualifications

Required:



  • B.S. degree in Mechanical, Biomedical, or related Engineering discipline (Master's preferred).
  • 10+ years of progressive experience in medical device design and development, with proven success delivering Class II or III products under design control.
  • Strong proficiency with 3D CAD (SolidWorks preferred), GD&T, and mechanical design best practices.
  • Demonstrated expertise in one or more of the following areas: electromechanical systems, fluid delivery, plastic design, embedded devices, or disposable/reusable system integration.
  • Hands-on problem-solving skills and ability to translate user needs into robust engineering solutions.
  • Excellent communication, documentation, and presentation skills; able to influence across functions and levels.
  • Experience collaborating with contract manufacturers or development partners.
  • Experience mentoring junior engineers and leading technical teams.



Preferred:



  • Experience with enteral feeding or pain management devices.
  • Knowledge of polymer materials, molding, or device sterilization methods (EO, gamma, etc.).
  • Strong IP awareness and prior participation in patent development.

Salary Range:

The anticipated average base pay range for this position is $129,000.00 - $151,000.00. In addition, this role is eligible for an attractive incentive compensation program and benefits. In specific locations, the pay range may vary from the base posted.
