Overview
Responds to life safety emergencies, providing rescue, pre-hospital medical care, fire prevention, protection, and suppression. Provides pre-hospital care in accordance with State Department of Health EMS Regulations and department protocols.
Responsibilities Responds to emergency calls, providing scene stabilization, rescue, patient care, and suppresion. Provides pre-hospital care to level of training as Paramedic, guides and directs all on-scene patient care. Emergency interventions are based on assessment, following written Adult and Pediatric Protocols approved by the State. May operate ambulance and other department vehicles.
Responsible for initial scene assessment, stabilization, and mitigation of injury and damage. Directs extrication and rescue efforts unless relieved.
Demonstrates a commitment to life safety and patient care. Maintains a positive attitude and effective communication with co-workers, physicians, outside agencies, patients, and family members whether during routine or crisis situations.
Documents emergency calls and routine activities. Documents patient transports and files reports to the State EMS.
Participates in the maintenance of the department, vehicles, equipment, and quarters. This includes cleaning, moving equipment, repairings equipment and vehicles, painting, and pumping fuel and water. Will involve the use of ladders. May potentially involve significant heights greater than 50 feet and rope rescue techniques.
Participates in continuing education and continuous quality improvement. Ateends courses and ongoing training related to the control and operation of complex rescue and fire suppression systems or other programs related to assigned duties.
Qualifications
Education: Completion of fire training. Licensure: EMT-Paramedic license in the state of practice. Valid driver's license, good driving record that is insurable. Experience: None. Certifications: National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians as Paramedic. PR certification. Advanced Cardiac Life Support. Other: Must be physically fit and able to pass medical exam and physical ability test. Radio communication skills essential. Must be able to interact with outside agencies such as law enforcement and receiving hospitals. Must be able to operate emergency vehicles safely. Maintain currency in Emergency Vehicle Operators Course. Must be able to interact effectively with all public and/or corporate businesses and their management and staff in a positive manner that respects their organization yet projects Mercy Standards. Preferred Education: Some college hours preferred. Formal fire training preferred. Preferred Licensure: None. Preferred Experience: One year EMS experience preferred, either as Basic or higher. Preferred Certifications: Certification by some fire agency preferred. Preferred Other: mechanical engineering skills preferred. Auto repair and maintenance preferred.
