What Your Job Will Be Like

We are seeking a Manager, R&D Science and Engineering (6746) who is passionate about leading and developing teams that impact national security missions. Join our diverse team and develop creative solutions to unique national security challenges!

This dedicated R&D Manager will lead the newly formed Department 6746 within the USNDS Ground Systems Program Group (6740). This Group leads the development of systems and algorithms using space-based sensor data to detect, identify, locate, and characterize nuclear detonations. The newly formed Department 6746 combines key capabilities from our on-orbit data exploitation team with our ground data processing teams, focusing on integrating data from soon to be launched spaced base sensors. The new manager of Department 6746 will partner with the existing management team to revamp and grow the research, development, engineering and information technology capabilities required to ensure successful delivery of data fusion and exploitation tools into the future. This department will play a key role in defining the strategy to ensure the totality of the next generation USNDS will achieve operational acceptance.

On any given day, you may be called upon to:

  • Set the vision and direction of the department towards novel data science techniques and pursuing new opportunities.
  • Lead staff in the development of new concepts and maturation of new technical solutions that yield R&D opportunities for insertion into data analysis and exploitation systems.
  • Lead the development of project plans, requirements, and negotiate with both external customers and internal execution teams.
  • Assure execution of deliverables within negotiated budgets and schedules.
  • Develop and strengthen partnerships within the USNDS Ground and Flight management teams to advance capability development and project execution.
  • Champion a culture that promotes safety and security, as well as a diverse and inclusive work environment.
  • Partner with peers to interface across the USNDS community (US Space Force, USSTRATCOM, USSPACECOM, AFTAC, NNSA) in developing sound understanding of USNDS performance and data analysis needs
  • Manage staff development, including hiring, onboarding, professional development, and performance management.
Due to the nature of this work the selected applicant will work onsite. Occasional travel required.

Qualifications We Require

  • A Bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline and eight (8) years of directly relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of directly relevant education and engineering or scientific experience that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform independent research and development.
  • Active DOE Q-level security clearance with the ability to obtain an SCI clearance.
Qualifications We Desire

The ideal Manager, R&D Science and Engineering candidate for Sandia National Laboratories will in addition possess the following:

  • Two or more years of demonstrated leadership experience.
  • A graduate degree in science or engineering (MS or Ph.D.).
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills in developing trusting relationships with peers, staff, management, customers, and stakeholders.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in the development and delivery of presentations, proposals, reports and documentation.

Also, for this posting we are seeking individuals with the following experience:

  • Experience with remote sensing and/or space system data science, including development of large volume data collection, processing, and exploitation systems.
  • Demonstrated program/project management and execution experience, including delivery of large, complex systems while meeting cost, schedule, and performance
  • Demonstrated ability to organize, prioritize, and follow through on commitments on multiple tasks in a dynamic environment
  • Experience with and knowledge of current USNDS Ground Systems and/or Space Systems
About Our Team

The Space Ground Systems Programs leads the design, development, and delivery of the operational ground segment of the United States Nuclear Detonation Detection System (USNDS). USNDS is a space-based remote sensing system designed to meet national security needs for both the warfighter and the treaty monitoring community. The team provides leadership and advanced technical solutions throughout the life cycle of these systems, from inception of new systems to enhancing capability in currently operational systems.

Posting Duration

This posting will be open for application submissions for a minimum of seven (7) calendar days, including the 'posting date'. Sandia reserves the right to extend the posting date at any time.

Security Clearance

Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q security clearance to start, or equivalent active security clearance with another U.S. government agency (e.g., DOD). Sandia is required by DOE directive to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.

Applicants offered employment with Sandia are subject to a federal background investigation to meet the requirements for access to classified information or matter if the duties of the position require a DOE security clearance. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause a clearance to be denied or terminated by DOE, resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment.

EEO

All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, age, disability, or veteran status and any other protected class under state or federal law.

NNSA Requirements for MedPEDs

If you have a Medical Portable Electronic Device (MedPED), such as a pacemaker, defibrillator, drug-releasing pump, hearing aids, or diagnostic equipment and other equipment for measuring, monitoring, and recording body functions such as heartbeat and brain waves, if employed by Sandia National Laboratories you may be required to comply with NNSA security requirements for MedPEDs.

If you have a MedPED and you are selected for an on-site interview at Sandia National Laboratories, there may be additional steps necessary to ensure compliance with NNSA security requirements prior to the interview date.
