Job Description

The Tax Manager will lead and support tax compliance, reporting, and planning activities. This role will operate within the broader corporate tax function, with responsibility for premium tax compliance as well as exposure to multi-state indirect taxes and statutory reporting.

This position is ideal for a tax professional with strong multi-state tax experience who is interested in expanding into insurance-specific premium tax, or an experienced premium tax professional seeking broader tax leadership exposure.

Responsibilities for the Manager, Premium Tax include but are not limited to:

  • Lead the preparation and review of tax filings, state assessments, and related compliance requirements.
  • Coordinate quarterly and annual tax reporting, including GAAP and statutory considerations.
  • Partner with accounting and finance teams to ensure accuracy and completeness of tax-related financial data.
  • Conduct tax research and support tax planning initiatives to optimize tax positions and minimize risk.
  • Support SOX controls and audit processes, including internal and external audit requests.
  • Serve as a key point of contact for tax authorities, auditors, and external advisors.
  • Identify and implement process improvements and automation opportunities across tax workflows.
  • Contribute to systems enhancements and integrations impacting tax reporting.
  • Supervisor and/or mentor team members, with opportunity to expand leadership scope over time.
  • Complete ad-hoc analysis as requested by senior management
  • Perform accruals analysis and provide necessary true-up analysis as needed
  • Collaborate cross-functionally across Finance, Claims, Operations and IT.

The Ideal Candidate for this role will have:

  • A bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or related field from an accredited college or university.
  • Experience or combination of education and experience in lieu of education requirement.
  • Candidates may come from one of the following backgrounds; 1) Premium Tax/Insurance Tax, preferred but not required, 2) Indirect Tax (sales/use, gross receipts, state & local tax), 3) Corporate Tax with strong multi-state exposure, or 4) Public accounting (Big 4 or mid-tier) with tax specialization.
  • 5 - 10 years of relevant accounting or tax experience.
  • 2-3 years of management experience
  • Prior leadership, project ownership, or information team leadership preferred.
  • Insurance industry experience is preferred but not required.
  • Strong understanding of multi-state tax compliance frameworks.
  • Familiarity with GAAP tax reporting and/or statutory accounting concepts.
  • Ability to interpret and apply complex tax regulations across jurisdictions.
  • Experience with tax or financial systems (e.g., Oracle, Premium Pro).
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to operate in a matrixed, evolving environment.
  • Effective communicator with ability to translate technical concepts.
  • Process improvement mindset.
  • Ability to balance compliance rigor with business practicality.
