Construction Materials Engineering Technician

S&ME is looking for a motivated and passionate Construction Materials Engineering Technician to join our Construction Services team in Greensboro, North Carolina. Ready to apply your skills and expertise on real-world construction projects? Bring your talent to S&ME and make an impact!

What You Will Do:

As a Construction Materials Engineering Technician, you will expand your expertise in construction materials testing, including soil, concrete, asphalt, and related materials, while supporting you in earning additional industry certifications. You'll primarily work in the field, supporting active projects and ensuring quality and safety standards are met. Your efforts will make a visible impact as you see projects take shape and build valuable hands-on experience.



  • Project and Documentation: Review and understand project specifications prior to fieldwork. Accurately record field observations and test results for construction materials such as soil, concrete, asphalt, and other related materials.
  • Data Management: Enter and manage field and laboratory data efficiently using Metafield and other information systems.
  • Equipment Maintenance: Ensure all field and laboratory equipment is properly calibrated, maintained, and meets applicable industry standards.
  • Special Inspections: Perform testing and inspections of construction materials in accordance with International Building Code (IBC) requirements and company procedures.
  • Communication and Collaboration: Maintain clear communication with supervisors, contractors, and clients to provide project updates, discuss findings, and resolve issues as needed.



What We're Looking For:

Individuals that have construction materials testing experience, but are eager to expand and share their knowledge with others. You'll need to be detail-oriented, adaptable, and committed to delivering high-quality, accurate results. Being able to work outdoors for extended periods of time and are willing to learn new testing methods, ask questions and have a natural drive for success.

Qualifications:



  • Education: A High School diploma/GED
  • Experience: 3+ years in construction testing/inspections of soil, concrete, masonry, and/or asphalt materials
  • Certifications: A minimum of two (2) active certifications in any of the following:

    • American Concrete Institute (ACI): Field Testing Grade I; Strength Testing Technician; Laboratory Technician
    • International Code Council (ICC): Special Inspector (Reinforced Concrete, Masonry, Soils)
    • DOT Certifications in Aggregate, Conventional Density, Asphalt, and Concrete (QMS Roadway is a plus)


  • Key Competencies:

    • A strong ability to communicate effectively (speaking, reading, and writing) in English
    • A solid understanding of math concepts related to weight, volume, pressure, and units of measure





Working Conditions and Physical Demands:

This role involves hands-on work in outdoor environments, and with Company-provided Personal Protection Equipment (PPE), you'll need to be comfortable with:



  • Working outdoors in varying weather conditions
  • Walking over rough, uneven terrain and standing (potentially up to 12 hours a day)
  • Routinely lifting and carrying 40-50lbs, (field/laboratory samples and equipment)
  • Working outside of normal business hours and traveling (typically out-of-town and/or overnight) as project need arise
