Position Summary
The Assistant to Alapaha & Tifton Sr. Farm Manager will facilitate the Tifton Animal Science Farm, supervise undergraduate and graduate students while coordinating closely with the FRS Superintendent, ADS Senior Farm Manager, and faculty to plan, organize, and execute daily operations. This is a hands-on leadership role involving large-animal care and safety, farm operations, field preparation, planting, harvesting, and ongoing maintenance of facilities and equipment.

Farm research includes small-plot and large-scale field trials, as well as animal feeding and grazing studies. The position involves maintaining the herd and farm in an orderly, attractive manner to promote the University's image. Key responsibilities include training and scheduling students; implementing animal care and health protocols year-round; managing forage and livestock production; procuring feed, supplies, and equipment; and supporting research, extension, and instructional activities. This position is also responsible for coordinating with the Senior Farm Manager & FRS Superintendent to manage budgets, ensuring fiscal responsibility to optimize resources and maintain infrastructure, and work with faculty and staff to fulfill the research, teaching, and extension missions in compliance with industry, governmental, and university standards.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies

  • Comprehensive knowledge of livestock management and agronomic practices for growing and harvesting crops used to feed beef cattle in both pasture and feedlot settings.
  • Understand livestock and forage production systems and demonstrate proficiency in low-stress cattle handling while adhering to Beef Quality Assurance standards.
  • Strong organizational skills are essential for prioritizing and coordinating activities related to beef production, forage management, and field research.
  • Effective verbal and written communication
  • Competency in using computer technology including email, and the ability to maintain accurate farm, research, and beef management records as directed by faculty and the ADS Senior Farm Manager
  • Ability to lead and direct coworkers, foster positive working relationships, and adapt priorities based on weather conditions and research objectives.
  • Technical competency in seedbed preparation, planting, and forage crop management
  • Ability to hold and maintain Beef Quality Assurance certification

Physical Demands

  • Heavy lifting, climbing, bending, and squatting.
  • Work in environmental extremes and outdoor conditions including heat, cold, and wet environments.
  • Work around livestock including dust, noise, smells, etc.
  • Work varied schedules according to the needs of the farm. May need to work some evenings, weekends, and holidays to ensure proper animal care and farm operations
  • Driving and pulling trailers on public roads to perform job related duties as needed.

Duties/Responsibilities

  • Responsible for ensuring each farm optimizes available resources, including personnel, land, and equipment, to support the department's mission of conducting timely research and delivering educational programs
  • Works with the Farm Manager and team to coordinate animal care, waste management, forage production, infrastructure upkeep, and ensure animals are fed on weekends and holidays
  • Manages all activities pertaining to forage and livestock production, irrigation, equipment repairs, animal biosecurity, and maintenance as it relates to the animal's health and safety
  • Research support in collaboration with senior management - including maintaining communication with faculty and adherence to research protocols
  • Makes decisions regarding facilities and equipment while maintaining research integrity
  • Develops nutrient and forage management plans for all locations
  • Manage inventory of tools and equipment
  • Recommend and direct equipment purchases and repairs
  • Supervise irrigation systems and oversee mowing, harvesting, storing, and transporting forage crops
  • Directs repairs and maintenance of storage facilities
  • Ensures safe transport of state property - including trucks, animals, and equipment
  • Supervision of undergraduate and graduate students
  • Develops and implements training programs for employees and new hires on each farm
  • Travel to other UGA locations to manage animals across the state

  • Responsible for managing purchasing and budgetary operations for Animal and Dairy Science (ADS) farming activities in Alapaha and Tifton
  • Submit pre-approvals
  • Complete purchase transactions for all three farms
  • Manage purchases in Works
  • Reconcile monthly P-card statements
  • Prioritize and coordinate procurement of farm inputs, supplies, and equipment
  • Work with vendors to obtain quotes and prepare bid specifications to ensure timely acquisition to support farm operations
  • Participate in fiscal accountability in collaboration with the ADS Senior Farm Manager and FRS Superintendent
  • Ensure all activities comply with UGA and USG policies, procedures, and training requirements
