Job Description

Johnson County District Court has an opportunity for counsel to provide appointed legal services for our Behavioral Health Court cases under the County financed "contract system." One applicant will be selected for this contract and will be expected to attend staffings and docket calls every other Thursday. The chosen applicant will provide out-of-court representation to of the program participants and will represent program participants at revocation hearings in Division 6.

Please note - This opening is for a contract of $9,000 annually and will be awarded to one applicant. This contract will be up for renewal on January 1, 2028.



Job Requirements

    The contract is for two years in length, beginning February 1, 2026. Attorneys are independent contractors, subject only to Supreme Court Rule 226, the Rules Relating to Discipline.
  1. Caseloads and workloads are assigned and adjusted by the court.
  2. The contract attorneys will be selected by a systematic process administered by the Chief Judge, Judge Wonnell and Court Administrator Laura Brewer. Overall legal/professional qualifications will be emphasized. Extensive experience or background in behavioral health cases, such as care and treatment, is not required but is preferred.
  3. The contract attorneys will be expected to participate in ongoing education in areas of behavioral health and/or treatment court modalities on an annual basis.
  4. Applicants must submit the signed original Application to Provide Legal Services, along with a copy of your resume, to Laura Brewer, District Court Administrator at email Laura.Brewer@jocogov.org no later than January 12, 2026. Interviews are possible for these positions.
  5. The courts reserve the right to modify or adjust any of the terms of the attorney contracts at the expiration of each contract and offer different terms going forward.

Salary Range: $9,000 annually
