Georgia-Pacific's Containerboard mill in Brewton, AL is seeking qualified individuals to consider for the Utilities Unit Coach position reporting to the department Performance Development Leader. The Unit Coach will be responsible for performance management, development, and coaching of operators within an ownership-based work system environment so that each operator and team can be successful. Our Team

The Brewton mill is located in south central Alabama about an hour from Mobile, AL, Pensacola, FL, and the beautiful beaches of the Gulf Coast. The team is made up of 450 employees who produce white top linerboard and solid bleached sulfate (SBS) paperboard. The SBS material is used to make GP's Dixie plates. White top linerboard is used in production of corrugated containers and displays. This position is an opportunity to be part of a rapidly expanding organization with tremendous growth potential. The most recent $160M capital investment is expected to be completed in late 2024. Brewton was also the first fully integrated pulp and paper mill in the US to receive an Energy Star designation from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. We are Brewton.

What You Will Do

  • Lead, mentor and develop hourly employees utilizing Principle Based Management framework and Deliberate Operations tools to improve capability and performance
  • Motivate each employee to create the greatest value by executing meaningful performance evaluations annually and performance feedback discussions periodically with all hourly employees
  • Interface with hourly leadership and the Performance Development Leader to identify capability gaps and implement gap closure plans
  • Support the ownership-based work system vision by ensuring employees are on the right team, in the right role, and assigned responsibilities based on their comparative advantage
  • Encourage principled entrepreneurship by working through the RRE (roles, responsibilities, and expectations) process, and holding individuals and teams accountable for operating strategies and results
  • Recruit, interview and onboard individuals who have virtues and talents that are aligned with our culture and that enhance the ownership-based work system
  • Maintain a working process knowledge so that coaching conversations with hourly employees on problem solving and troubleshooting (root cause analysis techniques) can be successful
  • Support the skills qualification and knowledge evaluation processes for operators to assist in talent gap closure plans and ensure timely skills advancement and learning
  • Develop, format and review SOPs, EOPs and training materials and curricula to ensure all material is accurate, up to date and useful to operators
  • Assist in managing competing priorities in a flow-to-work environment and providing on-shift coaching and feedback to control room operators, field personnel, support personnel, and utility positions
  • Manage daily time and attendance and resolving time, attendance, quality, safety, and other performance issues in a timely and expeditious manner with assistance from Human Resources, PDL, and/or Area Leader as appropriate
  • Utilize effective communication, interpersonal, planning, and organizational skills to acquire, share, and apply knowledge to improve decisions and results
  • Available for on-call needs - after hours, weekend and holiday as necessary

Who You Are (Basic Qualifications)

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Experience with coaching team members on performance with the intent of improving individual behaviors and team cohesion and harmony, which creates value for the department
  • Supervisory or leadership experience in a heavy industrial, manufacturing or military environment
  • Experience using Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint & Outlook)

What Will Put You Ahead

  • Associate degree or higher in Engineering or Business field of study
  • Experience building Roles, Responsibilities, and Expectations (RREs) and completing performance reviews
  • Experience utilizing business acumen regarding labor costs, labor strategies, staffing, and training in a union environment
  • Experience coordinating resources to work within work processes and audit programs, understanding the building blocks of those processes and where individuals with certain capabilities will fit
  • Experience developing, facilitating, and managing training materials and programs in a manufacturing environment
  • Experience with problem-solving and understanding of root cause analysis techniques, specifically regarding coaching individuals
