Overview:

We are seeking a Neutron Chopper Group Leader who will lead a team of technicians to focus on the installation, operation, and maintenance of neutron chopper systems at the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS).This positionresidesin the Neutron Chopper Group in the SNS Beamline Operations Section, Neutron Scattering Division,Neutron Sciences DirectorateatOak Ridge National Laboratory(ORNL).

As part of this team, you willbe responsible formanaging a team toestablishand maintain robust and reliable operations of neutron chopper systems across a suite of 19 scattering instruments at a facility thatoperates24/7 during periods of neutron production.The Group Leader must becognizantof operational parameters and ancillary equipment and lead a team that can provide operational support to the scientific programs conducted on those instruments.The Group Leader will coordinate with other group leaders, engineers, instrument sciencestaffand other technical support facility staff to troubleshoot faults and schedule maintenance.The Group Leader creates an environment that is diverse and embraces theSCoRprinciples as well asmaintaininga dedicated operations-oriented culture among team members.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Lead a team of technicians in the assembly, maintenance, installation, testing and commissioning of neutron chopper systems.

  • Responsible for all operating chopper system ancillary equipment.

  • Provide technical support of installed beamline chopper systems operation and provide prompt response to issues during neutron production cycles.

Basic Qualifications:

  • A BS degree in a science or engineering related field with at least 8 years of relevant experience, or significant relevant experience may be considered in lieu of education.

  • Demonstrated experience with neutron chopper systems.

  • Demonstrated experience working with complex scientific instrumentation andoperatingunder the constraints of radiological environments associated with a neutron scattering facility.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Leadership experience in a highly technical environment.

  • Experience with vacuum, magnets, water, power distribution, and instrumentation/controls systems.

  • Experience with rotating machinery/engines or machine/parts tolerancing.

Special Requirements:

  • Work involves various physical requirements and working conditions. As such, a pre-hire physical will berequiredafter offer.

  • Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.
