Self-Defense Instructor (Life & Leisure Specialist/part-time) @ Any Northwood Tech Campus Location

Northwood Technical College is seeking applications from qualified candidates for a part-time Self-Defense Instructor/Life & Leisure Specialist at any of our four campus locations. (Ashland, New Richmond, Rice Lake, or Superior)

The ideal candidate blends high-level technical expertise with a genuine passion for empowering others. You will be responsible for teaching practical defensive tactics while ensuring all instruction remains within the legal frameworks of use-of-force laws. Demonstrate and explain self-defense techniques clearly, ensuring student safety is prioritized at all times. Tailor lessons and coaching styles to accommodate students of varying skill levels and physical abilities. Incorporate knowledge of local self-defense laws and the use of force continuum into practical training. Foster a positive, respectful, and inclusive atmosphere that builds student confidence.

• Demonstrate professional behaviors to support teaching and learning and utilize varied strategies for managing the learning environment.
• Identify exit learning outcomes and external standards, develop competencies that describe intended learning outcomes, create performance-based plans and assessment tasks for each course, develop learning objectives and plans, prepare syllabi, and utilize a quality review process to validate curriculum.
• Utilize a variety of data analysis tools, analyze data from teaching and learning experiences, and use data to inform decision making about the teaching and learning process.
• Assess effectiveness in embracing diversity, examine the impact of college, community, and student demographics on teaching and learning, and create an inclusive, effective learning environment that addresses barriers and provides reasonable accommodations.
• May be assigned to mentor high school teachers who offer Northwood Tech-articulated courses.
• Model the Employability Essentials expected of Northwood Tech students, which are to communicate clearly, think critically, and demonstrate professionalism, and practice inclusivity.
• Designated as a Campus Security Authority (CSA) to receive and report criminal incidents to the Northwood Tech Safety Office by virtue of this role's responsibilities at the College (only applies to instructor positions with club advising duties).
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Experience Required:

• Proven experience in martial arts, defensive tactics, or related combat disciplines.
• Candidates must possess a strong understanding of the legal aspects of self-defense and jurisdictional force laws.
• Must have the ability to convey physical movements to diverse learners effectively and maintain a commitment to a controlled and safe training environment.

Preferred:

• Completion of a recognized Self-Defense Instructor certification program, along with current certification in First Aid and CPR/AED.

FY26 Salary - Life & Leisure Specialist - $24 / hour
