The Vector-borne Disease Diagnostic Laboratory (
VBDDL) is within the Department of Clinical Sciences (
DOCS), administered by the College of Veterinary Medicine at NC State University.
The focus of the
VBDDL at
NCSU-
CVM is vector-borne disease research and diagnostics. We strive to identify, characterize, and advance our understanding of vector-borne pathogens for purposes of benefiting animal health and translational research. It is our intention to provide quality answers to diagnostic questions. The assays, antigens and controls used are developed and validated as a component of our research. We reserve the right to modify methods or reagents as needed to achieve the best analysis possible without reliance on any proprietary methods or reagents. |

| Essential Job Duties |
The
VBDDL is seeking a detail-oriented and proactive
Medical Laboratory Technician to join our Molecular Diagnostics team. In this role, you will perform critical diagnostic
PCR testing for vector-borne diseases, manage clinical samples, and assist in the development of cutting-edge molecular workflows.
Primary Duties:
Diagnostic Operations: Perform routine and specialized molecular testing for vector-borne diseases, including probe-based, multiplex, and droplet digital PCR, as well as Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) and DNA sequence analysis. Workflow Optimization: Develop, validate, and document streamlined high-throughput DNA extraction and PCR methods; create and modify Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for evolving laboratory workflows. Quality Assurance & Data Integrity: Monitor assay quality, investigate unusual test results, and perform cross-functional quality checks by correlating molecular data with clinical history and geographic location. Laboratory & Equipment Management: Oversee the maintenance and calibration of DNA extraction robots and thermocyclers; manage reagent preparation, specimen storage, and the entry of orders and results into the laboratory information system. Leadership & Research: Supervise and train student workers and work-study assistants; contribute to original research projects with the opportunity for co-authorship on scientific manuscripts.

Professional Communication: Exceptional interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate technical data clearly to laboratory colleagues, scientists, and veterinary professionals. Safety & Compliance: Strict adherence to biosafety protocols and institutional safety regulations to maintain a secure and compliant laboratory setting.

Qualifications
| Minimum Experience/Education |
High school diploma or equivalency and one year of laboratory experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Some positions may require compliance with current Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) Regulations. |
| Preferred Qualifications |
- Experience with DNA extraction and PCR methodologies, including probe-based, multiplex, and quantitative PCR (qPCR).
- Hands-on expertise operating and maintaining high-throughput automated instruments such as the QIASymphony, KingFisher, and Tecan liquid handling systems.
- Proficiency in Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) and the use of specialized nucleotide sequence analysis software.
- Skilled in Orchard/UVIS (or similar Laboratory Information Systems), Google Drive, and Microsoft Office, with a focus on advanced data organization in Excel.
- Proven ability to communicate effectively and interface professionally with veterinarians and scientists regarding diagnostic results and services.
