Summary
This role is responsible for the strategic and day to day management of a fleet of approximately 90 tractor trailers, 100 trailers, and 70 fleet vehicles, ensuring safe, compliant, reliable, and cost effective transportation operations. The position provides leadership for drivers and support staff while overseeing equipment utilization, maintenance, and regulatory compliance to meet internal and external customer service requirements.
Key Responsibilities
- Plan, direct, and oversee daily transportation operations for a fleet of 90 tractor trailers, 100 trailers, and 70 fleet vehicles, including scheduling, dispatch, routing, and load planning to meet service and production requirements.
- Develop and manage fleet preventive maintenance programs for tractors, trailers, and light vehicles; coordinate repairs (internal and third party), minimize downtime, and ensure all equipment is safe and roadworthy.
- Ensure full DOT and applicable state regulatory compliance, including driver qualification files, hours of service, DVIRs, maintenance records, vehicle licensing/registration, permits, and drug/alcohol testing program coordination.
- Lead, supervise, and develop drivers and transportation staff; oversee hiring, training, coaching, performance evaluations, and corrective action in partnership with Human Resources.
- Monitor fleet performance, fuel usage, tires, and other key cost drivers; analyze data from telematics, GPS, and maintenance systems to improve efficiency, safety, and cost per mile.
- Oversee and approve trucking and fleet related purchase requisitions, including parts, tires, fuel programs, rentals, and contracted services within budget guidelines.
- Partner closely with plant/operations leadership to align fleet capacity with production and customer demand; adjust plans for seasonal, volume, and route changes.
- Serve as primary contact for trucking vendors, maintenance providers, regulatory agencies, and internal stakeholders on fleet operations and service issues.
- Champion and enforce safety policies, training, and standards; investigate accidents and incidents, coordinate repairs and insurance reporting, and implement corrective action to reduce risk and improve CSA/safety scores.
- Maintain accurate, audit ready records and reports for fleet assets, maintenance, inspections, fuel, incidents, and driver compliance; prepare metrics and KPIs for leadership review.
- Assist as needed with back up driver coverage or on site equipment moves consistent with qualifications and licensing.
- Perform other transportation and fleet related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education and Experience
- Five to seven years of progressively responsible experience in transportation or fleet management, preferably managing a large mixed fleet of tractors, trailers, and light vehicles.
- Valid CDL (Class A preferred) and acceptable driving record.
- Prior experience of at least 3 years supervising drivers and/or maintenance personnel.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Strong knowledge of DOT regulations, hours of service rules, and fleet compliance practices.
- Working knowledge of truck, trailer, and light vehicle maintenance requirements and terminology.
- Proficiency or willingness to become proficient in transportation and fleet management software, Microsoft Word and Excel within the first year of employment.
- Demonstrated leadership, communication, planning, and problem solving skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast paced environment.
