Position Summary

SUMMARY OF POSITION:

This position is responsible for assisting in the production of rubber compound for hose extrusion. Operators must be fully qualified in one area of compound production such as a mixer operator, mill operator, or compounder.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Mixer Operator
    1. Operate mixer to produce batches of rubber compound to specification as defined by schedule
    2. Load raw materials and monitor equipment, temperatures, and cycle times to assure proper mixes
    3. Use material handling equipment, such as a forklift, to move and prepare materials
    4. Perform cleanout on machinery
  2. Mill Operator
    1. Operate mill and festooner to transfer rubber compound to skids for usage to produce rubber hose
    2. Set mill and cutter to proper thickness and width to produce compound
    3. Prepare slab dip to proper consistency
    4. Perform cleanout on machinery
  3. Compounder
    1. Prepare compound materials needed to supply the mixer
    2. Order raw materials, weight, cut, and mix ingredients into containers for mixer operator use
    3. Use material handling equipment, such as a forklift, to move and prepare materials
  4. Functions Associated with all functions

    1. Collect samples for testing

    2. Perform quality checks on compound at associated stage of production

    3. Able to foster professionalism with all associates along with internal and external customers

    4. Work safely in accordance with regulations, standards, and procedures in a manner that eliminates risk to health and the environment. Notify leadership of unsafe conditions or practices unlawful activities and activities which present unreasonable health and/or environmental risk. Report all safety and/or environmental incidents to leadership immediately.

DEPARTMENT SPECIFIC/ NON-ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Participate in peer-based teams (i.e., Natural High Performance Teams), and work with groups to initiate and implement programs such as Lean Manufacturing and 5-S.
  2. Participate on project teams, star point teams and kaizen events when needed.

  3. Attend and participate in all training opportunities required to develop in the role

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Education:

High School diploma or GED preferred

Experience:

Previous experience in manufacturing preferred

Preferred Skills/ Qualifications:

  1. Good verbal and interpersonal communication skills

  2. Sound decision making skills

  3. Good math, reading and writing skills

  4. Be able to exercise continuous mental, visual and audio attention

Skills/ Competencies:

1. Basic computer skills

2. Vision: Near acuity and accommodation for reading information to perform job tasks

3. Requires constant alertness to surroundings and product quality with attention to detail

4. Must be able to operate material handling equipment and hoist, if needed

Physical Requirements:

1. Ability to operate material handling equipment

2. Ability to work in hot and cold temperatures

ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS/ SCOPE:

  • Report directly to Value Stream Team Leader

  • Work closely with other departments to resolve issues with the processes & equipment

WORKING CONDITIONS:

The employee may be subject to:

  • High noise levels from operating machines and equipment

  • Physical hazards from operating machines and moving reels

  • Exposure to nuisance fumes and dust

  1. Work in areas where safety equipment will be required (steel toe shoes, eye protection, hearing protection, high visibility clothing)

  2. Standing is required for extended periods of time. Walking, pushing, pulling, reaching, bending, turning, twisting, squatting, and lifting is performed on a regular basis

  3. Requires high degree of manual dexterity, which could be performed under restrictive conditions

  4. Requires flexible hours and short notice for overtime
