Position Description:

The Department of Communication Studies at the University of Iowa is searching for a one-year, full-time Visiting Assistant Professor, teaching three courses per semester. There is a possibility of 1-year renewals of this position for a maximum of 3 years. The position will typically involve teaching 3 General Education Rhetoric courses per semester.

RHET 1030 is required for almost all undergraduates in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, typically in their first or second year.It is a discussion-based class (enrollment capped at 20) with a focus on reading, writing, speaking, listening, critical thinking, and media literacy skills. Instructors should be capable ofteaching discussion-based courses, offering clear and frequent feedback, scaffolding assignments, and designing syllabi that follow our curriculum.

Education Requirement:


  • Terminal degree or Master's degree plus commensurate experience, in Rhetoric, English, Education, or related field in hand by the start date At least 3 years of experience teaching writing, speech, or a comparable subject.


Required Qualifications:


  • At least 3 years of experience teaching writing, speech, or a comparable subject
  • Demonstrated excellence in teaching at the college level.
  • Experience advising or mentoring high school, undergraduate, or graduate students


Desirable Qualifications:


  • Experience working with K-12 or community college students
  • Experience with Community-Engaged Scholarship or Partnerships
  • Familiarity with controversies related to AI Literacy
