Responsibilities
Position Description & Typical Duties
Performs Mechanical Computer Aided Design and Drafting (MCAD) modeling. Possesses knowledge and skill in a wide variety of MCAD methods, procedures, and techniques. Prepares new design models and revises existing models which may represent mechanical, electrical, electromechanical, hydraulic/pneumatic, civil, structural, utility, HVAC and other types of systems and technical disciplines.
- Produces electronic engineering drawings to clearly and effectively document engineering ideas, detailed manufacturing requirements, assembly processes, performance characteristics and similar technical content. Drawings may or may not be associated with solid models and may include both master and subassembly drawings which require complex views/projections, cross-sections, and detail views to effectively communicate all aspects of the design. Interacts with engineers to ensure these drawings accurately capture design intent. Works with production staff and subcontractors to ensure manufacturability of the documented design.
- Knows and applies industry standard symbols, icons, callouts, legends, shadings, and line types appropriate to the type of drawing being generated.
- Revises MCAD models and associated drawings of as-built and as-documented components and systems based on first-hand inspection, marked-up ("redlined") prints created by others, verbal direction, sketches, specifications or other inputs which communicate the necessary result.
- Interprets designs/models prepared by others to create detailed drawings. Exercises independent judgment in interpreting data based on knowledge of the design intent.
- Independently obtains any necessary information to support the modeling and drawing development process including published commercial product information, physical dimensions and tolerances, clearance/interference fit requirements, available fabrication processes, available standard parts, and similar information from a wide variety of data sources such as catalogs, manuals, guides, specifications, reference documents, and field visits.
- Uses basic technical mathematics and formulas to calculate weights/masses, center of gravity, dimensions, required quantities, etc. to complete drafting assignments and to ensure that potential problems in construction, manufacture, assembly, installation, and operation are resolved during the design phase.
- Communicates with others to explain models, drawings and related work products in both one-on-one environments and group meetings, both in-person and remotely. Creates periodic written and verbal status updates describing completed work, on-going work, upcoming work, workload, technical risks, estimated completion dates and similar topics associated with participation in a team work environment.
- Supports multiple projects simultaneously based on priorities and schedules established by a supervisor.
