Responsibilities
Lead mechanical design development and coordination of designs involving industrial and domestic piping, plumbing, chillers, boilers, HVAC ducting, exhaust, motor control, process chemicals, wastewater discharge, Fire Protection systems and possibly other mechanical building systems.
- Create, review, and stamp mechanical engineering drawings and specifications utilizing AutoCAD and Revit BIM models, ensuring fidelity with ASHRAE, NFPA, and local mechanical codes.
- Perform detailed HVAC load calculations, chiller plant system analysis, pump curve validations, and fluid flow assessments using engineering software and hand calculations, ensuring compliance with ASHRAE for indoor air quality and thermal comfort.
- Coordinate multidisciplinary BIM clash detection meetings and generate clash reports in Navisworks; provide timely resolution of detected conflicts through model updates and workflow adjustments.
- Collaborate closely with project managers to develop and maintain mechanical scopes, project schedules, and budget estimates, identifying cost and constructability impacts early in design phases.
- Lead peer reviews and quality assurance/quality control processes to verify design accuracy, code compliance, and operational integrity before client submission and regulatory review.
- Direct technical interfaces with contractors and vendors during submittal reviews, request for information (RFI) responses, and site walks to validate installation adherence to design criteria and ensure timely resolution of issues.
- Support scheduling and cost estimation processes by providing input on electrical system scope, vendor lead times, and constructability considerations relevant to project delivery phases.
- Mentor junior engineers and designers, fostering technical growth and encouraging knowledge-sharing practices across the mechanical discipline and project teams.
- Maintain up-to-date awareness of applicable state and local building codes, environmental regulations, and industry best practices to proactively mitigate compliance risks.
- Contribute to the continuous improvement of internal standards, checklists, and modeling protocols consistent with SSOE's culture of quality and innovation.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering from an ABET-accredited institution, which qualifies for licensure in the state of practice.
- Active PE license in Arizona or evidence of ability to obtain by reciprocity within six months of hire; responsible charge of mechanical design and stamping authority required.
- Demonstrated expertise in HVAC systems design including air handling units, VAV systems, chillers, boilers, pump hydraulics, exhaust ventilation, and wastewater discharge equipment.
- Proven proficiency with AutoCAD and Revit for mechanical design and BIM coordination, including model-based clash detection in Navisworks on projects exceeding 50,000 square feet or industrial facilities with multi-system integration.
- Demonstrated ability to interface with clients and contractors to define scope, lead technical discussions, and deliver electrical design solutions aligned with operational and safety requirements.
- Comprehensive working knowledge of ASHRAE standards, NFPA 90A, and relevant California mechanical and fire codes.
- Strong ability to communicate complex technical information clearly and concisely to clients, project managers, contractors, and cross-discipline teams.
- Demonstrated leadership in mentoring junior engineers or leading small project teams through complex electrical design challenges.
- Salary Range: $130,000 - $160,000/year depending on location, education, depth of relevant experience. Opportunity for ample rewards, leadership incentive/bonus program, and ownership investment opportunities.
- Benefits: Includes comprehensive health, dental, and vision insurance, life insurance, 401K retirement savings plan (with company matching), opportunities for professional development and training (including support for relevant licensure & certifications), and generous PTO & paid holidays.
