Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a Chief of Staff for the New Brunswick Chancellor. Reporting directly to the Chancellor and serving on her Executive Leadership Team, the Chief of Staff is the primary liaison between the Office of the Chancellor and the wider Rutgers-New Brunswick and Rutgers University communities on strategic and operational matters. The position provides an opportunity for a proven leader to work collaboratively with university leaders across Rutgers-New Brunswick and university wide on institutional initiatives and strategic goals.

Among the key duties of this position are the following:

  • Serves as principal adviser to the Chancellor of Rutgers-New Brunswick, advancing institutional vision and strategic priorities across the campus.
  • Provides leadership in the development, coordination, and implementation of university-wide strategic initiatives in partnership with the Chancellor's Cabinet, Deans, and senior administrators.
  • Facilitates alignment across academic and administrative units to ensure coherent execution of the Chancellor's strategic agenda.
  • Represents the Chancellor in engagements with faculty, staff, students, alumni, community partners, and local, state, and federal officials, cultivating collaborative relationships that strengthen the University's mission and public impact.
  • Prepares strategic analyses, briefing materials, and policy recommendations to inform executive decision-making on complex institutional matters.
  • Advises on high-level policy development, regulatory considerations, and emerging issues affecting the University, exercising sound judgment and political acumen.
  • Organizes and synthesizes cross-cutting issues requiring executive attention, ensuring thoughtful prioritization and timely resolution.
  • Conducts research and benchmarking to identify best practices and advance institutional effectiveness, innovation, and accountability.
  • Partners with senior leadership to navigate sensitive, high-profile matters with discretion, diplomacy, and a commitment to shared governance principles.

Offer Information
The final salary offer may be determined by several factors, including, but not limited to, the candidate's qualifications, experience, and expertise, and availability of department or grant funds to support the position. Qualifications






Minimum Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's degree with seven years of progressively responsible administrative work experience, preferably in a University setting.

  • An understanding of the internal/external engagement and administrative needs of a complex matrix organization.
  • Ability to make administrative/procedural decisions and judgments independently.
  • Ability to work effectively with a wide range of individuals and diverse constituencies, handle highly-confidential information, and complete multiple complex tasks simultaneously in a fast-paced environment.
  • Demonstrated understanding and knowledge of the principles and practices of management and the administration of applicable laws, rules, regulations, codes and statutes relating to higher education.
  • Demonstrated political acumen and experience navigating complex institutional, governmental, and stakeholder environments with sound judgment and discretion.
  • Ability to gather data, compile information, and prepare aesthetic, comprehensive, and informative reports.
  • Excellent verbal, electronic, and written communication skills; impeccable interpersonal skills, and the ability to work strategically and collaboratively across departments and divisions essential.
  • Ability to foster cross-divisional, cross-disciplinary partnerships and initiatives with an intention and focus on relationships, policies and processes.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree or advanced degree in a related area.
