Role: Senior Design Drafter

Location: East Aurora, NY

Duration: 12 months with possible extension

Schedule: 1st shift


Overview:

As a Senior Design Drafter within the Space and Defense Group, the company's longest-standing and most innovative division. In this role, you will support cutting-edge space technologies by developing detailed design layouts, 3D models, and manufacturing drawings while collaborating across engineering, sales, and program management teams.


As a Senior Design Drafter, you will:

  • Communicate with cross-functional teams to discuss design, drawing, and fabrication requirements
  • Lead the graphical development of new products from initial layout through final drawings
  • Create accurate 2D drawings and 3D solid models independently or collaboratively
  • Use CAD systems to develop layouts for visualization, clearance checks, and manufacturing support (CAM)
  • Support Engineering, Sales, and Program Management with bid and proposal layouts and assemblies
  • Compile and organize drafting submittal packages for customer delivery
  • Plan and manage drawing requirements, ensuring completeness, accuracy, and adherence to standards
  • Review and check detail drawings while guiding other drafting personnel when needed
  • Coordinate project activities with attention to timelines and scheduling requirements
  • Participate in status review meetings and provide level-of-effort estimates


To be considered for this role, you will bring:


  • Associate degree in Mechanical Technology or a related field



  • 20+ years of drafting/design experience in a manufacturing environment



  • Strong knowledge of drafting practices, dimensioning, geometric tolerancing (GD&T), and fabrication methods



  • Proficiency in mechanical CAD (MCAD) tools; experience with Siemens NX and/or Teamcenter PLM preferred



  • Solid understanding of machine shop practices, materials, and manufacturing processes



  • Knowledge of stress, thermal effects, and material properties



  • Strong mechanical design skills, especially in kinematic mechanisms and packaging within defined constraints



  • Excellent organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills




It would be great if you also had:


  • Strong creative and investigative design abilities



  • Experience working in advanced technology environments (e.g., space/defense)



  • Ability to lead drafting efforts and mentor junior team members



  • Strong collaboration and communication skills across multidisciplinary teams
