What Your Job Will Be Like

We are seeking a highly motivated Systems Engineer to join the W76 UK Trident Program Team. This opening provides an excellent opportunity for a highly motivated individual with a scientific or engineering background to make significant contributions to Sandia. In this unique role, the successful candidate will have broad reaching responsibility to guide a range of engineering projects including annual stockpile assessment and production activities. In addition, the successful candidate will serve as a knowledgeable expert for the weapon system through coordination with internal partners and external stakeholders, both in the U.S. and in the U.K.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Plan, conceive, conduct or manage research and development for Sandias customers and sponsors related to the UK Trident Program.
  • Partner hand-in-hand with W76 UK Trident Program team and the W76 Stockpile manager to define and execute daily activities and priorities.
  • Present technical and programmatic updates to SNL leadership and external partners.
  • Provide leadership to help resolve technical trades and to ensure continual progress of the program.
  • Coordinate with project management personnel to develop schedules, budgets, and project plans.
  • Partner with peer stakeholder leaders to negotiate requirements, deliverables, and risks.
  • Communicate status, issues, and concerns to various levels of management.
  • Lead research and development conceptual system trade studies.
  • Use systems engineering principles to research, design, and develop experiments, processes, and technologies.
  • Mentor system and other Sandia staff members in a variety of settings including formal and informal methods.

Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite and travel frequently (up to 50% of the time). Applicant must be able to travel to the United Kingdom multiple times a year.

The successful candidate will become intimately familiar with the detailed function of W76 Mk4 & Mk4A nuclear weapon components, subsystems, and systems, and gain a breadth of knowledge across all phases of the product realization lifecycle.

Salary Range

$117,500 - $235,700

*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

Qualifications We Require

  • A bachelors degree in a relevant discipline and five (5) years of directly relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of directly relevant education and engineering or scientific experience that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform independent research and development.
  • Active DOE Q-level security clearance or equivalent.
Qualifications We Desire

The ideal R&D Systems Engineer candidate for Sandia National Laboratories will in addition possess the following:

  • Graduate degree in Engineering or a highly related field where an independent research project was a graduation requirement (e.g., independent project, thesis, or dissertation).
  • Experience working with Nuclear Security Enterprise (NSE) laboratories and plants including Pantex, Kansas City National Security Campus (KCNSC), Lawrence Livermore Laboratory (LLNL) and Kansas City National Security Campus/New Mexico Operations (KCNSC/NMO).
  • Experience working on engineering design, qualification, production, or related modeling/simulation projects.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams.

Also, for this posting we are seeking individuals with the following experience:

  • Ability to adapt quickly to changing environments and priorities, demonstrating resilience and a positive attitude in dynamic situations
About Our Team

We are responsible for the W76-0/-1/-2 nuclear weapon stockpile and the suite of activities that support annual assessment, surveillance, lifetime planning and associated development of the weapon systems. In addition to established stockpile work we actively collaborate on numerous development and qualification projects, including JTA3, Mk4B, ALT939 Integrated Surety Architecture, and D5LE2 programs. Production activities at KCNSC continue across several areas and require frequent coordination.

Additionally, we lead the development of testers and operational activities for hardware and provides engineering leadership for all W76-0/-1/-2 test body assembly and disassembly activities. We are also the interface with test and computational simulation organizations across the Labs and provides management of schedule and budget associated with executing the annual assessment process, on behalf of NNSA and our Navy customers.

Our responsibilities also extend to systems support for the UK Trident versions of the Mk4/Mk4A. Directed by the U.S. Navy and NNSA, this support includes assembly, disassembly, surveillance, deployment, and retirement activities

Posting Duration

Security Clearance

Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q security clearance to start, or equivalent active security clearance with another U.S. government agency (e.g., DOD). Sandia is required by DOE directive to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.

Applicants offered employment with Sandia are subject to a federal background investigation to meet the requirements for access to classified information or matter if the duties of the position require a DOE security clearance.
