Diagnostic and GQC Technologist II

The Jackson Laboratory
United States, California, Sacramento
1650 Santa Ana Avenue (Show on map)
Mar 21, 2026

The Diagnostic & GQC Technologist II supports the health and well-being of animal colonies by conducting routine and advanced diagnostic testing to monitor for infectious agents and other contaminants across multiple laboratory areas. This role performs complex microbiological and molecular assays, troubleshoots common laboratory issues, and contributes to the early detection of undesirable agents as well as the monitoring of genetic backgrounds of colonies when needed. Working under limited supervision, the technologist ensures reliable and accurate monitoring of colony health and genetic quality, supporting the overall success of the Diagnostic and Genetic Quality Control laboratories.

Key Responsibilities & Essential Functions

  • Diagnostic Laboratory Testing: Perform or assist with diagnostic evaluations including necropsy procedures, tissue collection using aseptic techniques, and microscopic/macroscopic examination for parasites and microbes. Support preparation and processing of samples for microbiological and parasitological testing, including basic culture work, fecal examinations, and other routine assays. Maintain accurate documentation, follow biosafety practices, and ensure proper handling, disposal, and preparation of laboratory materials, media, and reagents.
  • Molecular & Analytical Methods: Perform or learn to perform qPCR workflows (e.g., C. bovis, LCMV panel) following established protocols. Begin conducting mass spectrometry, growth based, and biochemical assays for bacterial and fungal identification under guidance.
  • Genetic Quality Control (GQC): Learn and assist with GQC workflows under supervision, including sample processing, molecular assays, DNA extraction, and preparation of materials for outsourced SNP analysis when required.
  • Data Recording & Reporting: Enter and maintain accurate data in laboratory information systems supporting animal health and genetic quality programs. Generate standard and ad hoc reports for all stake holders.
  • General Laboratory Operations: Support routine laboratory maintenance including sample intake, autoclave use, media/buffer preparation, and proper disposal of biohazardous materials. Maintain sanitation of laboratory spaces, including decontamination of work areas and completion of scheduled cleaning tasks.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Bachelor's degree in Biological Sciences or a closely related field.
  • 1-2 years of experience in a molecular, diagnostic or clinical laboratory setting.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and resolve technical issues independently and in a timely manner.
  • Familiarity with identifying microorganisms using phenotypic and/or molecular methods.
  • Strong problem solving skills, attention to detail, and a high degree of accuracy in all work performed.
  • Ability to learn new laboratory techniques quickly and apply them effectively.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize tasks, adapt to changing demands, and multitask efficiently.
  • Ability to document testing procedures and results clearly and accurately.
  • Proficiency with standard computer applications (Word, Excel, Outlook) and ability to learn laboratory databases and software systems (e.g., D365, GQC Database).
  • Strong communication skills that support clear and effective collaboration across diverse teams and technical backgrounds.
  • Demonstrated ability to contribute positively to a fast paced, technology driven, and highly collaborative work environment.

Pay Range: $27.29 - $39.58
