Led by East Carolina University, the Coastal Studies Institute is a multi-institutional research and educational partnership of the
UNC System including North Carolina State University,
UNC Chapel Hill,
UNC Wilmington, and Elizabeth City State University. The Coastal Studies Institute, located on the
ECU Outer Banks Campus, focuses on integrated coastal research and education programming centered around the needs, issues, and concerns of coastal North Carolinians by bringing together the interdisciplinary teams. Specific research expertise of
CSI spans a variety of coastal disciplines including coastal dynamics, ecology, biology, economics, environmental geography, social and behavioral sciences, and engineering.
CSI uses an interdisciplinary approach and scientific advances to provide effective solutions to complex problems while helping coastal communities, ecosystems, and economies thrive.
Summer Camp Assistant will be responsible for assisting with the implementation of the Coastal Studies Institute's (
CSI) summer day camp program offerings. This position will be required to work occasionally outdoors and assist with teaching programming both on site at the Coastal Studies Institute and in the field at offsite locations. This position will be responsible for presenting age-appropriate programming related to the research and activities of the Coastal Studies Institute to the participants in CSI's summer day camps. |
| Job Duties |
Position will assist in planning and implementing the weekly
CSI summer day camp schedule.
Lead educational and engaging lesson plans and activities for camp participants both at
CSI and in the field. Identify and respond to camper behavior issues.
Communicate camp activities and participant experiences with camp leadership.
Know, understand and follow all
CSI and
ECU camp safety protocols and procedures associated with CSI's summer camp program. |
| Minimum Education/Experience |
High school diploma or equivalency and one year of related childcare experience; or equivalent combination of training and experience. |
| License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation |

| Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education |
A high school degree or equivalent is required.
Team player and the ability to work in a fast-paced educational environment.
A high degree resourcefulness and problem-solving skills.
Good judgment and be flexible.
Excellent oral and communication skills.
Knowledge of natural history, environmental and marine education.
Interpersonal skills, time management, leadership, research, planning and organizing skills.
Have the ability to lead and participate in camp activities in a variety of environments including
CSI classrooms and in the field.
Ability to lift 50lbs. |

Valid NC Driver's License
Upon hire, completion of
CPR, first aid and any additional training required by
ECU/
CSI. |
