JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS

The College of Agriculture is seeking applicants for part-time job of Research Assistant (Turfgrass Entomology Lab) to support ongoing laboratory and field-based research projects.This position provides hands-on experience in applied entomology and turfgrass science, with responsibilities spanning data collection, laboratory procedures, and maintenance of research infrastructure. The assistant will contribute to projects conducted on golf courses and university research plots.

Job duties to include:

Field research support

  • Assist with data collection at golf courses and university turfgrass research sites
  • Support establishment and maintenance of field trials, including marking plots with turf paint
  • Collect insect samples and assist with field monitoring activities
  • Record environmental and agronomic data (e.g., soil moisture readings)

Laboratory work

  • Assist with laboratory-based experiments and sample processing
  • Follow established laboratory protocols and maintain compliance with safety procedures
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of laboratory space

Equipment and facility maintenance

  • Clean and maintain field and laboratory equipment, including sprayers and sampling tools
  • Assist with upkeep of project vehicles
  • Ensure equipment is prepared and functional for daily research activities

General support

  • Assist the Principal Investigator, research technician, and graduate students with ongoing projects
  • Work independently or collaboratively, depending on project needs

Requirements, qualifications, and/or competencies:

  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
  • Willingness to work outdoors in varying weather conditions
  • Ability to follow laboratory safety and operational protocols

Preferred, but not required:

  • Background or interest in entomology, turfgrass science, agriculture, or a related field
  • Experience with fieldwork, data collection, or laboratory procedures
  • Valid driver's license

Schedule:

  • 20 hours/ week

Compensation:

The starting rate for this job is $15.00/hour.

BACKGROUND CHECKS/CLEARANCES

Employment with the University will require successful completion of background check(s) in accordance with University policies. This position requires that you operate a motor vehicle as a part of your job duties. A valid driver's license and successful completion of a motor vehicle records check will be required in addition to standard background checks.
