About This Role

Kansas State University's College of Agriculture Seeks a student-centered Academic Advisor. The Academic Advisor provides comprehensive academic advising to students, guiding them through their academic journey, helping them meet graduation requirements and advising them on career goals. This position supports students by providing individualized service, maintaining confidentiality and assisting with the interpretation of academic policies, procedures and support services. The Advisor is responsible for creating personalized academic plans, monitoring progress and promoting additional academic opportunities, such as minors, certificates and graduate programs.

Duties/Responsibilities:



  • Provide academic advising from recruitment to graduation, helping students plan and navigate degree requirements, course selection and academic policies. Provide clear, thorough onboarding materials and academic guidance to students.
  • Assist students in developing academic plans, advising students on course sequencing, enrollment and degree completion, while explaining programrequirements and updating progress each semester.
  • Communicate important academic deadlines, expectations and university policies to students.
  • Assist students with special circumstances such as full withdrawals, late drop appeals, academic fresh start/forgiveness, reinstatement, programchanges and graduation checks.
  • Utilize data tools (e.g., Navigate platform) to monitor student progress, identify needs and develop retention strategies to support students through tograduation.
  • Serve as a liaison between faculty, staff, and students to address academic concerns.
  • Collaborate with faculty and academic departments to ensure students' academic success and retention.
  • Assist students with transfer credit, working with academic programs staff to ensure that transfer work is evaluated and applies appropriately to theirdegree program.
  • Assist students facing academic or personal challenges by connecting them with appropriate campus and community resources.
  • Develop and implement strategies to enhance student success, retention and engagement, ensuring students are aware of available support services.
  • Lead information sessions, workshops and presentations for prospective and current students on academic advising, policies and resources.
  • Maintain accurate student advising records and provide data for accreditation, reporting, and other assessments.
  • Collaborate with other student services, such as Recruitment and Admissions, to address the unique student needs.
  • Assist students with connecting them with their faculty mentor.
  • Communicate department, college, and university events with students, as well as inform them of the importance of active engagement.
  • Contribute to team efforts, including developing and implementing programs and strategies to support student success.
  • Participate in professional development activities, including conferences and workshops, to stay current on advising practices, enhance student supportstrategies and contribute to the advising program's overall effectiveness and the college's mission.
  • Serve on and/or lead university committees, search committees, and task forces as required.

Worksite Description

This position is Hybrid and/or Remote eligible. This position operates in a hybrid work environment, combining remote work with on-campus responsibilities. While the majority of duties may be performed remotely, regular attendance at on-campus meetings is expected, along with some time spent working in the on-campus office.

Employees will be required to participate in in-person team meetings on a routine basis, as well as attend occasional on-campus events and trainings as needed.

All employees must reside in the United States when they begin working to comply with state law. K-State is unable to provide remote or hybrid work opportunities for residents of the state of Idaho.


What You'll Need to Succeed

Minimum Qualifications:



  • Requires a bachelor's degree and one year of relevant experience. Education beyond the minimum degree requirement may count toward required experience if deemed relevant by the hiring manager. The degree requirement ensures candidates possess the foundational knowledge in educational theory, student development and institutional policy interpretation essential to effective academic advising. These competencies are typically developed and rigorously validated only through the comprehensive curriculum and intensive experiential learning inherent in a formal degree program.



Preferred Qualifications:



  • Two years of academic advising experience.
  • Strong knowledge of academic programs, policies, procedures and student support services.
  • Ability to provide individualized advising and assistance, ensuring confidentiality and supporting student needs.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to effectively collaborate with students, faculty and staff.
  • Ability to utilize advising platforms and other data tools to track student progress and identify areas for improvement.
  • Familiarity with enrollment management systems and student information systems (e.g., Banner, PeopleSoft).
  • Problem-solving skills and a student-centered approach to service delivery.
  • Knowledge of FERPA regulations and best practices in academic record management.
  • A commitment to fostering an engaging and student-centered environment.
