Clinical Assistant Professor-Clinical Skills/Junior Surgery

The Department of Clinical Sciences, College of Veterinary Medicine at Kansas State University invites applications for a part-time, term, Clinical Assistant Professor in the Clinical Skills and Junior Surgery Laboratory and is annually renewable. Candidates must hold a DVM degree or equivalent from an AVMA-accredited institution. Internship training or two years of experience in private veterinary practice is preferred. The successful candidate will join a well-supported Clinical Skills and Junior Surgery team and will work collaboratively with faculty and staff in both the clinical skills, small animal surgery, livestock, and equine surgery sections to further the training and assessment of veterinary students. Specific duties in the fall semester small animal section include preparing and facilitating laboratory exercises, supervising and assessing student performance with regards to physical exams, blood draws, clinical assessment of patient problems, evaluation of students' medical record keeping including patient SOAPs and discharge instructions, and overall patient care. Throughout the 8 weeks of the fall semester when live small animal surgeries are occurring, it is expected that email communication and review of discharge instructions will be required after hours (evenings Monday - Thursday) as needed. This position may also include direct supervision of students' performing anesthesia, ovariohysterectomies, and castrations in the laboratory. Occasional need for providing transport with a college vehicle (truck and trailer) of shelter animals to and from the college may also occur.

Specific duties for this course within the spring semester, large animal surgery, will include facilitating and teaching various models-based, cadaver and live animal labs for common large animal surgery techniques. Spring lab duties will require a minimum commitment of two days a week (Mondays and Wednesdays) during the 16-week semester, with the exclusion of spring break. Live animal labs will require proficiency in bovine and small ruminant cesareans, and equine and bovine castrations with their corresponding analgesia and anesthesia. Live animal cesarean section laboratories also occasional weekend duties. Physical exams, pre-operative set-up, post-operative and neonatal care, patient rounds and medical record review will be part of this applicant's duties during live animal labs. Additional teaching of third year clinical skills laboratories on Tuesday and Friday afternoons may also be included, pending applicant interest and availability.

This position may also contribute to professional student mentoring through formal curricular assignments and student-interest certificates and clubs. Opportunities may exist for the individual to participate in clinical service or rounds sessions within the Veterinary Health Center at K-State to maintain clinical acumen and proficiency.

The starting date is negotiable. Salary will be commensurate with the applicant's experience and qualifications.

Minimum Qualifications:

• DVM (or equivalent) degree
