We're looking to hire a talented Mechanical Design Engineer based in Denton, TX.

L-TEC Steel Industry Products is part of the ESAB Group, a global leader in welding and cutting technologies with over 120 years of innovation. L-TEC originated as the Welding and Cutting Group of Union Carbide Corporation and became part of ESAB in 1985. Since then, L-TEC has been a pioneer in the development of scarfing machines and steel conditioning equipment for the steel industry.

Reporting to the VP, Robotics & Digital Solutions, the Mechanical Design Engineer is responsible for supporting our SIP (Steel Industry Products) by driving exceptional CAD Design work, supporting engineering design support and supporting customers with design related inquiries.

Primary Duties:

  • Create and modify 3D models and assemblies in SolidWorks.
  • Convert legacy 2D PDF drawings into accurate 3D models.
  • Implement and maintain a drawing control system using Windchill.
  • Provide design input and support for scarfing machine systems, which include:
    • Fluid Control Systems (valves, piping, flow regulation).
    • Structural Components (frames, supports, and mechanical assemblies).
    • Motion and Actuation Systems (pneumatic positioning mechanisms).
  • Eventually serve as a technical liaison for customers, assisting with design-related inquiries and documentation.
  • Install, start up, repair, and support SIP products globally, primarily scarfing machines and related equipment.
  • Diagnose equipment malfunctions, perform preventive and corrective maintenance, and implement software/hardware fixes.
  • Test faulty equipment using knowledge of electronic/electromechanical systems; resolve deviations from design specifications.
  • Provide on-site and remote customer support between projects, including technical phone support and troubleshooting.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or related field.
  • Proficiency in SolidWorks and at least one 2D CAD system.
  • Experience with Windchill or similar PLM systems.
  • Knowledge of industrial machinery design.
  • Familiarity with steel industry processes; prior experience working in a steel mill is preferred.
  • Experience creating and managing engineering documentation standards.
  • Strong understanding of fluid control systems and mechanical design principles.
  • Ability to interpret and convert legacy drawings into modern CAD formats.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to work across time zones.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, Project, Visio).
  • Understanding of GD&T and ASME Y14.5 drawing standards.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a cross-functional team environment.
  • Experience supporting manufacturing and/or field installation of equipment preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities and meet project deadlines.
  • Self-motivated with a strong focus on customer satisfaction and on-time delivery.
  • Leadership capability to direct work and guide others; self-starter able to work independently or in a team.

Working Conditions

  • Remains in a stationary position 50% of the time and involves additional physical demands such as ascending/descending stairs, walking stooping and standing.
  • Must wear Personal Protective Equipment 'PPE' when working/visiting manufacturing and plant locations.
  • Constantly operates a computer and other office productivity machinery including but not limited to printer, tablets, cell phones.
  • Moves transports, puts, or removes equipment weighing up to 50 lbs.; pushes, pulls products weighing up to 200 lbs. using provided safety tools.
  • Extensive domestic and international travel required, including installation projects of 30+ days and possible uninterrupted stays of up to 3 months based on project/customer needs.
  • Ability to work in industrial environments (steel mills/machine tools experience is beneficial).
