Position Summary:

The Research Computing Assistant supports the day-to-day computing needs of an AI research lab. This role assists with maintaining the lab's computing environment and research software tools. The position works closely with faculty, graduate students, and collaborators to help ensure that lab systems run smoothly and that new students can quickly begin productive research work. The Research Computing Assistant will assist with managing software environments, troubleshooting technical issues, and supporting the development and testing of research prototypes. The position also plays an important role in onboarding new students and promoting best practices for using shared lab computing resources. This position is well suited for a recent graduate in computer science or a related field who is interested in gaining experience supporting research projects in computer vision, machine learning, and AI. Performs other duties as assigned.

Essential Functions of Position:

* Assist with the operation and maintenance of the lab's computing resources, including workstations, shared servers, and storage systems.

* Help install and maintain research software environments.

* Assist researchers with setting up computing environments for experiments and projects.

* Provide technical support and basic troubleshooting for lab computing resources in coordination with university IT services when needed.

* Help new students and collaborators onboard to lab computing tools and workflows.

* Assist with organizing research data and maintaining documentation for lab systems and processes.

* Support the development and testing of scripts, tools, or research prototypes.

Required Education & Experience:

Bachelor's degree in computer science or a related field and at least 6 months' experience. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

Preferred:

Experience programming in Python or another scripting language.

Required Skills & Abilities:

* Familiarity with Linux environments.

* Exposure to machine learning or data science tools (e.g., PyTorch, TensorFlow, or similar frameworks).

* Experience with Git or other version control tools.

* Strong organizational, problem-solving, and communication skills.

* Interest in supporting research in AI, machine learning, or computer vision.
