Goldbelt Integrated Logistics Services (GbILS) provides four specific areas of expertise-Logistics Engineering, Measurement Sciences, Program Management, and Technical Support-serving the scientific, technical, and engineering needs of clients. Summary: The Senior Scientist will function as the lead for Coast Watch Program Operations and Services.
Responsibilities
Essential Job Functions:
- Maintain and sustain current Coast Watch operational capabilities
- Enhance existing operations through continuous improvement initiatives
- Support the scientific development of new and improved satellite products
- Advance the utilization of emerging satellite products and services
- Identify and integrate innovative technologies into operational workflows
- Contribute to the evolution of operational satellite oceanography
- Engage with the broader scientific community to support advancements in satellite oceanography
Qualifications
Necessary Skills and Knowledge:
- Sound familiarity with non-NOAA space agencies' ocean, coastal, and inland water remote sensing satellite observation relevant to Coast Watch (e.g., from NASA, ESA, EUMETSAT, JAXA, CSA)
- Familiarity with commercial ocean, coastal, and inland water remote sensing satellite observation relevant to Coast Watch (e.g., from Planet, Maxar, ICEYE)
- Expertise in scientific data and product development and generation/processing, calibration and validation support, and quality control of environmental satellite data (e.g., sea surface temperature, ocean color, water surface roughness, ocean heat content, ocean surface vector winds, flood and inundation, sea and lake ice, as well as downstream value-added products such as fused and AI-ready products
- Technical, scientific and general audience writing, editing, and verbal presentation skills in the English language
- Graphical presentation and data visualization skills
- Familiarity with NOAA/NESDIS requirements, processes and procedures
- Knowledge of common earth science data formats, metadata and applications, such as HDF, Cloud Optimized GEOTIFF (COG), GeoZarr, or other new Cloud optimized formats, NetCDF-CF metadata standards, General Cartographic Transformation Package (GCTP) format
- Working knowledge of scientific programming languages such as Python, FORTRAN, C/C++, PHP, Perl, shell script, Java, JavaScript, MATLAB, IDL
- Familiarity with Linux platforms using PHP, CGI and GIS compliant internet map serving such as Google Map, ArcGIS online map service
- Familiarity with Cloud platforms (commercial, such as AWS) and associated cloud optimized data formats and metadata
- Knowledge and ability to maintain and develop scientific content and technical functionality of the Coast Watch Data Portal, the Coast Watch program website, Coast Watch Utilities Software
- Communication skills to engage in team coordination and collaborations
- Knowledge, skills, and experience in satellite earth observation data to understand the goals and objectives of technical work thereby enabling efficient flow of task execution
- Expertise with the observations and ocean information products from LEO and GEO missions
Minimum Qualifications:
- Graduate degree in science and/or technology fields
- Experience with maintaining ERDDAP, THREDDS, API servers
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master's degree or higher-level education and knowledge of and practical experience in ocean remote sensing
Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $125,000 - $140,000 annually. At Goldbelt, we value and reward our team's dedication and hard work.
