About The Role

The Lending Internship will provide an opportunity for a student with three years of completed coursework, or recent graduate from Fort Lewis College to work closely with our Lending team and be a part of the Commercial Lender Development Program designed to provide training in commercial credit, loan review, loan operations, and commercial lending. The candidate will work alongside all commercial lending personnel including lenders, analysts, administrative support, and management. The emphasis for this program is commercial lending in a community bank environment. Throughout the process the candidate will gain exposure to the bank's day-to-day operations and business strategies as it pertains to the bank's credit underwriting standards and business strategies in the commercial lending area.

Intern may have extensive contact with customers, vendors, the general public, bank staff and will interact in a professional, courteous manner, and conduct him/herself in such relationships in a manner that will enhance the overall efficiency and image of the bank. This person must have the ability to communicate effectively while working quickly and accurately. Disclosure of such information to any outside parties, either in a business or social context, can seriously affect the public's perception of us. Such disclosure may also jeopardize a relationship of trust that we enjoy with our customers. Any breach of confidentiality cannot be tolerated. The pay for this position is $25.00 per hour. All compensation offers are analyzed individually and take into consideration multiple factors including but not limited to geographic location, years of experience, and educational background.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Essential Functions:

The Lending Internship will provide training in commercial credit, loan review, loan operations, and commercial lending through shadowing various loan operations and lending roles throughout the bank. As the Intern shows proficiency, at management's discretion they will be given small commercial facilities for approval. These will primarily be for lower dollar amount C & I loans. Within the Commercial Lending Department, the Lending Intern will receive training and then be able to perform the following tasks:

  • Financial analysis of commercial loans.
  • Prepare well written financial analysis of loans for presentations to loan officers and/or loan committee.
  • Complete financial analysis reports.
  • Effectively communicate with lending officers, supervisors, and co-workers for various credit processes and procedures.
  • Review commercial credits for covenant monitoring, renewals, extensions, annual reviews, etc.
  • Assist lenders with Credit Presentations.
  • Understand BSJ's credit process and procedures including all proper documentation and timelines.
  • Conduct property inspections of collateral.
  • Participate in loan meetings and presentations.
  • Apply skills toward effective financial analysis of borrower's financial statements, cash flow analysis, and analysis of commercial credit.
  • Perform credit analysis of noncomplex credits.
  • Adherence to compliance processes and procedures.
  • Adhere to credit policy and business strategies to make sound underwriting and credit decisions.
  • Effectively communicate with customers for any/all credit requests and/or customer service needs.

This program will be implemented allowing the intern to learn the basics of Commercial Lending throughout the training process. This program will be designed to provide the candidate and management a measurable way to assess the progress of the candidate in addition to following The Bank of the San Juan's Core Values. Throughout the program, candidate and management will have regularly scheduled meetings to assess the progress of the candidate. Following are the expectations of the program:

  • Review of various commercial lending platforms and procedures including but not limited to:
    • Loan Application Process, Forms, and Procedures
    • Data Gathering and monitoring for new and existing loans.
    • Basic credit underwriting process and procedures.
  • Review of commercial loan policy.
  • Attendance of 1 weekly divisional loan committee meeting.
  • Introduction to lending staff and operation staff and key roles each individual plays in the process.
  • Assignment of commercial lenders and mentors to work with on a consistent basis to fulfill various assignments and tasks related to the credit process.

Ongoing Responsibilities and Adherence to Compliance:

  • Adhere to Bank of the San Juans Company Core Values.
  • Adhere to all applicable banking regulations, applicable laws, company policies, management directives, security, and operational procedures.
  • Responsible for the timely completion of all required Compliance and Security training assigned by GBCI and BSJ within the designated timeframes. It is the individual's responsibility to fully understand the content presented in each training module. If clarification is needed, the learner must proactively reach out to their supervisor to request further explanation or additional training as necessary.
  • Responsible for adherence to Bank Security Policy and for reporting security risks to management.
  • Keep management appropriately informed of area activities and of any significant problems.
  • Support the bank's mission by participating in Community Service and Bank sponsored activities, while consistently representing the bank in a professional manner. This includes maintaining a professional image, upholding confidentiality, demonstrating a positive "can-do" attitude, while being flexible, and adaptable to meet both the bank and customer needs.

  • Attend and actively participate in required meetings.
  • Provide exceptional internal and external customer
  • service by interacting calmly and professionally with individuals from diverse backgrounds at various levels within and outside of the organization.

About You

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Completion of three years at Fort Lewis College, and working toward a degree in finance, accounting, business or a related field or have completed their bachelor's degree in one of these fields.
  • Six months to one year of similar or related experience

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL, ABILITY:

  • High degree of attention to detail as well as excellent organizational skill(s) to perform in a fast-paced environment.

  • Must have ability to prioritize and organize heavy workload(s) and demonstrate effective time management skill(s).

  • Must have the ability to work in a professional manner and consistently demonstrate courtesy, customer service, and tact in a fast-paced/deadline-oriented environment.

  • Ability to work quickly and accurately: perform effectively under pressure; meeting multiple and sometimes competing deadlines and make decisions based on regulation(s), company policy(s), knowledge and experience.

  • Ability to work both independently and in a team environment.
  • Ability to understand and follow complex written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Basic computer skills with working knowledge of word processing, spreadsheets, ten-key, and general computer applications.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: Must be able to routinely perform work indoors in climate-controlled shared work area with moderate noise level.

Must be able to work extended hours or travel off site whenever required or requested by management. Must be capable of regular, reliable and timely attendance. Must be capable of climbing / descending stairs in an emergency situation.

Specific lifting abilities required by this job include: Medium work. Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include: The worker is required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; extensive reading; visual inspection involving small defects, small parts, and/or operation/inspection of machines and/or using measurement devices at distances close to the eyes.

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS: Starting salary is dependent upon relevant experience and may vary based on the geographic location of the position.
