HVAC Mechanic


Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport


Hourly Pay Range: $30.19 - $45.29

JOB SUMMARY: The Heating and Ventilating Mechanic is responsible for ensuring the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of the Central Plant. They operate and maintain all HVAC system components at General Mitchell International Airport and Timmerman Airport.


This role is similar to the Heating and Ventilating Mechanic 1 position but includes additional responsibilities such as oversight of the CMMS (CityWorks) to ensure work orders are properly closed, inventory is maintained, and contractors meet airport standards for scope and quality of work.


Additional duties include researching and acquiring technical information from engineering prints, technical literature, and consultations with outside vendors and contractors.


The Heating and Ventilating Mechanic 2 also serves as Acting Supervisor in the supervisor's absence.



JOB DUTIES:




  • Act as Supervisor in his or her absence: Serve as Acting Supervisor when the Supervisor is unavailable.
  • Monitor CMMS (CityWorks) for Department: Ensure work orders are completed and labor hours entered; coordinate with the Supervisor and GIS staff to develop and maintain the preventive maintenance program.
  • Provide Oversight and Monitor Contractors: Coordinate with contractors on scope of work, ensure completion meets Airport Standards, and verify work areas are restored to original condition.
  • Research and Acquire Technical Information: Obtain technical information from engineering prints, manufacturer literature, and vendor consultations. Collaborate with Supervisor, Building Trades, Maintenance Manager, or Airport Management to determine appropriate actions.
  • Operation of Central Plant: Provide 24/7 year-round coverage of Central Plant operations, including startup, shutdown, operation, and maintenance of chillers, boilers, cooling towers, air compressors, and water chemistry systems.
  • Monitor and Operate Two Building Automation Systems (BAS): Monitor, adjust, and respond to alarms from the Johnson Controls Metasys and Kain Energy Schneider Electric systems to maintain comfort and safety. Physically inspect systems not connected to BAS.
  • Off Hours Maintenance Support: Respond to after-hours calls from Airport Operations or tenants across all airport facilities and determine appropriate action, including temporary isolation/shutdown or contacting the Supervisor to call in Building Trades.
  • Maintain and Repair HVAC Equipment: Perform preventive and corrective maintenance on HVAC equipment, including AHUs, rooftop units, makeup air units, exhaust systems, and split DX systems. Tasks include filter and belt replacement, lubrication, and sheave alignment.
  • Oversee the Maintenance of Material and Parts Inventory: Maintain inventory of commonly used materials and parts such as filters, belts, lubricants, thermostats, actuators, and related components.
  • Assist Building Trades as required: Provide support to Building Trades, including assisting plumbers and fitters as needed when working on HVAC systems.



MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS




  • Current resident of the State of Wisconsin
  • Must have a high school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent


  • Possession of valid Wisconsin driver's license at time of application and maintained during incumbency


  • Must receive an Airport Class 2 license within 30 days of hire date.
  • Intermediate knowledge of all related computer and software applications, such as word processing and spreadsheets.
  • Intermediate knowledge of Building Automation Systems associated with digital controllers and PLCs.
  • Advanced knowledge of boilers and hot water systems and their digital controls.
  • Advanced knowledge of chillers and chill water systems and cooling tower systems and their digital controls.
  • The ability to lift/carry up to 60lbs; push/pull up to 80lbs.
  • At least three (3) years of experience in Mechanical Maintenance or with Central Plant and HVAC



PREFFERED QUALIFICATIONS:



  • NIULPE or ASOPE license
  • Low pressure license with 2nd Class Engineer's license
  • Associate's degree in HVAC, an HVAC certification, or specialized training in HVAC, central plant operations, or control systems.



NOTE: This original application is open to permanent residents of the state of Wisconsin at the time of application. The non-competitive examination will consist of criteria deemed appropriate by the Director of Human Resources.
