Position Overview:

Woolpert is hiring a Survey Instrument Operator to join our Survey & Geomatics team in Virginia Beach, VA. The Survey Instrument Operator is a mid-level role that supports the Survey Crew Chief by performing advanced field surveying tasks and ensuring accurate data collection. This position involves operating and maintaining survey equipment, conducting field calculations, reading maps and construction drawings, and assisting with activities such as boundary surveys, topographic mapping, and control establishment. The role also requires managing electronic data, monitoring equipment condition, and contributing both independently and as part of a team, with strong technical and computer skills essential for success.

What You Will Do:



  • Work under the direction of the Survey Crew Chief, following established survey procedures and safety protocols.
  • Apply survey-related mathematical concepts, including proportions, percentages, area, circumference, volume, slope, elevations, and coordinates.
  • Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot advanced survey instruments, such as total stations, GNSS units, levels, and data collectors.
  • Lead the setup and breakdown of survey equipment at project sites, ensuring efficiency and safety.
  • Collect, verify, and document accurate field data for a variety of survey types.
  • Record detailed field notes, sketches, and reports with precision.
  • Transport, clean, and store survey equipment, maintaining all tools in proper working condition.
  • Assist with transferring field data to office systems and perform preliminary data processing.
  • Mentor and train junior survey staff while supporting the Survey Crew Chief in coordinating the survey team.
  • Communicate effectively with team members, clients, and stakeholders to ensure projects are completed accurately and on schedule.


What You Will Bring:



  • High School Diploma or GED and applicable OSHA certifications.
  • Minimum of 2-4 years of experience in land surveying or a related field.
  • Must be mentally and physically capable of performing all essential duties required of the position.
  • Must have average communication skills, both verbal and written and be able to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations.
  • Must be able to travel frequently and extensively, overnight and/or out of town.
  • Must be able to work overtime as required.
  • Ability to read and interpret maps, plans, and construction drawings.
  • Good physical condition and the ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions.
  • CPU literate: Proficient computer skills, including data transfer, data processing software, and basic CAD/GIS applications.
  • Must have valid driver's license and pass a pre-employment Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) check. Must maintain satisfactory driving record, as required by our insurance company.
  • Must successfully pass pre-employment background and drug screening. Periodic drug testing may be required per company policy.


Working Conditions:



  • Work is performed primarily in outdoor environments, often in remote and rugged locations.
  • Exposure to various weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, and wind.
  • Physical demands include standing for extended periods, walking on uneven terrain, and carrying equipment.
