Job Description

The Development Engineer is responsible for the development and validation of electric vehicle power electronics and electrified vehicle systems/devices for passenger cars and trucks, will develop efficient and cost-effective power electronics using cutting edge technologies, the latest test and evaluation equipment/laboratory, and robust simulation tools. The Candidate will also develop power electronic devices DVP & R, define and carry out all required development/validation testing to ensure achievement of all functional objectives, and assure compliance to program goals and participate in supplier assessments and post-test inspection reviews, including detailed failure analysis.



The engineer will work closely with the chosen suppliers and manufacturing entities to ensure designs are robust to customer requirements, meet exact function, and are manufactural without defect will tested finished product for quality purposes and recommend changes to product specifications as necessary. The Development Engineer will define and carry out all required bench development/validation testing to ensure achievement of all functional objectives and assure compliance to program goals. The candidate will also define and carry out all required bench development, validation testing, hardware/software integration and diagnostics to ensure achievement of all functional objectives and assure compliance to program goals globally for Power Electronics on current and future programs.



Essential Duties and Responsibilities:



Technical Responsibility:



  • Contribute to the Global Technical Area (GTA) strategy and lead in the capability growth of the engineering team
  • Support and develop Technical Area (TA) core competencies
  • Support and contribute to knowledge base of internal and external best practices
  • Lead benchmarking studies and contribute to the benchmark knowledgebase
  • Propose and lead advanced development topics within the GTA
  • Propose continuous improvement opportunities to level up team skills, qualifications, tools and processes
  • Lead design proposals with set-based engineering principles
  • Lead designs with 6 Sigma design principles
  • Lead complex problem solving with cross functional teams



Project Planning, Target Achievement, Monitoring & Reporting:



  • Employ technical expertise to lead the engineering development of one or more projects
  • Lead and support the project team(s) engineering in achieving project objectives, performance and cost requirements, and timing milestones
  • Lead external support, services and resources supporting the project engineering development
  • Responsible for work development packages assigned to third parties
  • Confirm Functional Requirements and project performance targets and assure the targets are achievable
  • Confirm project cost and timing targets and assure the targets are achievable
  • Support the Chief Engineer (CE) and contribute to the project resource planning, budget development, and status reporting
  • Responsible to monitor the SW releases of each of the project development programs on time per the FROP (Feature Roll up Plan)
  • Responsible for meeting the serial production tact, First Time Quality (FTQ) and ergo targets
  • Responsible for meeting market region regulations, FMVSS, ECE, HV Charging Global Standards, etc.
  • Confirm the Design Verification Plan and Report (DVP&R) comprehend all project targets and is complete
  • Confirm the project Design Failure Mode and Effects and Analysis (DFMEA) comprehends all product risks and product usage cases


Project Related Interface:



  • Support and Promote Project and Operations Collaboration
  • Lead global development touchpoint and milestone meetings
  • Collaborate with Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (AME) to assure production feasibility
  • Collaborate with all cross functions to make complex decisions
  • Collaborate with the Global Technical Area Head (GTAH) to assure concurrent best practice sharing
  • Collaborate with the other project GTAs



Employee Related Tasks:



  • Ensure cooperation with all areas within the engineering and request the required frame conditions
  • Ensure cooperation with project management
  • Ensure cooperation with all other groups within the area
  • Secure knowledge of development tools within the group
  • Ensure training of employees according to the required skills
  • Escalate problems at the earliest time with the appropriate team members


Special Knowledge / Skills:



  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Project)
  • Computer knowledge and skills in CAD and CAE simulation preferred
  • Six Sigma certification preferred
  • Professional Communication skills (written and verbal)



Physical Demands / Work Environment:



  • Normal amount of sitting or standing, average mobility to move around an office environment, able to conduct normal amount of work at a computer
  • Position may require local, domestic and international travel - less than 20% domestic + international

Requirements

Basic Qualifications:



  • Bachelors Degree in Electrical Engineering or related degree field
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in electronics and circuit design and/or development
  • Some exposure / experience in leadership roles
  • Thorough understanding of power electronics and devices
  • DVP&R and DFMEA creation & execution experience
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Understanding of Electrical Engineering standards/protocols, and of power electronics/devices
  • Understanding of global charging system homologations and diagnostic requirements
  • Highly motivated and self-starter
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate to higher leadership


Preferred Qualifications:



  • Master of Science in Electrical Engineering or equivalent
  • Some exposure / experience in leadership roles
  • 5 years of experience in electronics and circuit design and/or development
  • Power electronics / electrical models, simulation experience, and FEA
  • Power electronics specifications expertise
  • Electric motor & powertrain controls experience
  • Design and release experience
  • Component diagnostics experience
  • Hybrid / high voltage experience
  • Supplier program management experience
  • Experience in ISO 26262 / ASIL Risk Class
  • Experience in Complete Vehicle development and Manufacture
  • Experience supervising or managing technical personnel
  • Excellent communication skills and experience working with global teams
  • Experience in launching a complete vehicle
  • Experience in design release and testing of components and assemblies
  • Must have a positive "can do" attitude
  • Must be flexible and able to course correct paths according to priority alignment
