Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Supervising Lab Technologist for the department of Pathology at the New Jersey Medical School.
Rutgers-New Jersey Medical School is seeking a Laboratory Supervisor for the Department of Pathology. The primary purpose of the Laboratory Supervisor position is to supervise and monitor the daily technical operations in the
CLIA-certified
CAP-accredited cytogenetic laboratory. In addition to performing the required duties of a Supervising Laboratory Technologist, the supervisor will ensure reliable documentation of sample processing, storage, and shipment by technologists. This includes ensuring specimens are processed and handled in accordance with guidelines, generating a daily schedule for the techs, reviewing instrument quality control, temperature logs, and equipment maintenance forms, assisting techs in troubleshooting QC or instrument issues, overseeing maintenance contracts, performing quarterly safety checks, and ensuring all technical staff are current on required training. The Laboratory Supervisor will assist the Laboratory Director in developing lab specific competencies and performing annual competency observations of staff, as needed, providing feedback on employee evaluations, and training new employees.
Routine Procedures will include, but not limited to:
- Reagent preparation, supply ordering, performing Tissue culture procedures, harvesting slides, Slide making, Slide banding and karyotyping, and FISH processing, probing, and scoping.
- Demonstrate the ability to make technical decisions regarding testing and problem-solving.
- Carry out various technical and clinical operations relating to the activities of the laboratory.
- Assist in the establishment of performance standards, proficiency testing, quality control, and procedures associated with the maintenance of the clinical laboratory licenses.
- Perform various assays independently with responsibilities for accurate methodology, proper
instrumentation usage, and result reporting. - Monitor, operate, and troubleshoot instrumentation to ensure proper functionality.
- Perform and document preventive maintenance and quality control procedures.
Laboratory Supervision and Administrative Duties will include, but not limited to:
- Supervise daily work activities in the lab, including specimen handling and shipment, QC, and instrument maintenance review and troubleshooting when needed.
- Initiate the new protocol introduction, including documentation, procedures, and processes to the technologists, technicians, and designated laboratory staff.
- Serve as the laboratory contact for clinicians or outside labs for specimen inquiries or issues.
- Assist in resource planning, department budget processes, and lab contract signing.
- Assist with the instruction and training of new employees and students in various techniques and procedures specifically related to Clinical Testing protocols.
- Write performance evaluations for assigned employees.
- Prepare for self-inspection and on-site CAP inspection.

Qualifications
| Minimum Education and Experience |
- Bachelor's Degree in a relevant science, plus three (3) years of experience as a Cytogenetic Technologist in a clinical cytogenetic laboratory.
- Two (2) years of supervisory experience is also required.
- An additional two (2) years of specialized Cytogenetic laboratory experience may be substituted for supervisory experience.

| Preferred Qualifications |
- Previous experience working in a Clinical Cytogenetic lab.
- Familiarity with CytoVision is preferred but not required.
ASCP certified preferred but not required.

- Exposure to human blood, bone marrow, body fluids, or tissues.
- Exposure to harmful chemicals.
- Must sit at the microscope for extended periods of time.

- Must be able to differentiate colors.
