Job Summary

Serve as a safety professional specializing in lab safety and hazardous materials management within the EH&S Department.

  • Researches and interprets lab safety guidelines, best practices, policies and regulations.
  • Monitors regulatory changes and updates programs/procedures, notifies the University Community, and if required provides training to ensure compliance.
  • Manage the Biological Safety Program.
  • Serve on the IBC and IACUC committees.
  • Manages the Lab Safety Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) program. Develops, implements procedures and provide training to staff and Principle Investigators to ensure proper use, maintenance, and disposal of laboratory.
  • Implements and maintains procedures for capturing and reporting near misses in laboratory settings (academic and research). Provides high level reports to the Employee Safety Committee highlighting corrective actions and recommendations.
  • Responsible for safety and environmental compliance within research and teaching labs throughout FIU. Provides proactive guidance for labs with safety issues in order to maintain overall laboratory compliance.
  • Maintains compliance with the various safety and health regulations pertaining to laboratories on the FIU campuses. Acts as a facilitator in resolving non-compliance laboratory safety issues.
  • Provide laboratory staff and Principle Investigators with the knowledge to rectify non-compliant issues.
  • Coordinates research lab transfers/closeouts with the Office of Research and Economic Development, and assists with researcher off-boarding process to ensure adherence to the cradle-to-grave procedures for hazardous materials/equipment.
  • Serves as a member of the Laboratory Safety Committee, and provides consultation on activities that may impact regulatory and University policy requirements.
  • Provides emergency response support for situations involving hazardous materials, or as deemed necessary by the department.
  • Performs other related duties/tasks as assigned or as directed. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in an appropriate specialization and two (2) years of appropriate experience or Master's degree in an appropriate specialization.


Desired Qualifications
  • Bachelors of Science in Biology, Health and Safety, Environmental Science, Chemistry, or other related life science.
  • Experience with grant writing and submission is a plus.
