Summary:

The Hershey Company Lancaster plant is a Non-Union plant producing Licorice Products such as Twizzlers, Nibs, and Pull & Peel, in a high-speed complex environment.

This position has direct reports and is responsible for management of the Quality Assurance, Microbiology, and Sanitation functions. This includes providing leadership, facilitating continuous improvement efforts plant wide, assuring excellence in food product quality and food safety throughout the manufacturing process, and assuring compliance to all regulatory and corporate guidelines.

Responsibilities:

Leadership



  • Directs the activities of the Plant Quality and Sanitation Departments in the effective/efficient execution of their functional responsibilities
  • Ensures effective sanitation and preventative pest control programs are maintained to assure compliance with Good Manufacturing Practices.
  • Develops and executes training programs related to quality, sanitation, and regulatory issues.
  • Leads preventative programs, process optimization efforts, problem solving and troubleshooting efforts for resolution of incidents.
  • Conducts manufacturing facility audits as appropriate to ensure and verify regulatory, customer, and internal compliance.
  • Develops and maintains Food Safety and Quality documentation (including programs, policies, specifications, HACCP/System Control Plans, and work documents).
  • Leads and coordinates activities associated with new and changing items and processes.



Administration



  • Manages all aspects of Quality Assurance, Microbiology and Pest Control to include such activities as staff development, performance management, budgeting, etc.
  • Assures that systems are properly maintained to support business objectives.
  • Ensures implementation of Hershey Employee Survey processes.
  • Selects, develops, and maintains a competent work force.
  • Utilizes formal education resources, technical skills training, on-the-job skill development, performance appraisal, staff planning and development, and other administrative activities as dictated by business needs.



Policy Compliance



  • Assures full compliance with federal, state and local regulations and conformance to the policies and procedures of the Corporation and to Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI)/Safe Quality Food (SQF) standards.
  • Acts as a liaison between plant and corporate management regarding Quality issues during incidents or crises involving the integrity of products or services.
  • Recommends to management the action required to efficiently resolve product deviations and consequential adverse publicity related to incidents.
  • Serves on multi-discipline corporate task teams as assigned by senior management.
  • Participates and serves as primary liaison during inspections by governmental agencies.



Process Improvement



  • Ensures proper investigation occurs for all quality deviations.
  • Recommends to management the action required to efficiently resolve product deviations and ensures implementation of preventive measures.
  • Conceives ideas for solution or prevention of problems compromising product/process quality, using knowledge, experience, and original thinking.
  • Assumes responsibility for testing ideas and taking corrective action as appropriate.
  • Effectively communicates across departmental lines, as required.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

Education/Certifications:



  • Bachelor's degree required; Food Science, Food Engineering, Biology, or Management Science fields strongly preferred.
  • Preferred certifications include Safe Quality Food (SQF) Practitioner, Preventive Controls Qualified Individual certification, HACCP certification
  • Six Sigma certification preferred



Experience:



  • Minimum 5 years of leadership/management experience (with direct reports) required.
  • Minimum 8 years of manufacturing experience in a high-speed automated Consumer Goods environment required (e.g. production of food, pharmaceuticals, household goods, tobacco)
  • Minimum 5 years of experience with progressive responsibility in Quality Assurance required.
  • Knowledge of Food Safety Modernization Act, HACCP, and/or UDSA regulatory compliance required.
