Job Title: Animal Technician

Location(s): San Francisco, CA

Scope of Duties:
Animal care and room sanitation, animal health, record keeping, maintenance, animal husbandry.

Job Summary:
Supports research programs by providing services associated with the care and use of laboratory animals, including rodents. Responsibilities include purchasing/receiving animals, daily care, and monitoring the health of all species. The Animal Technician is responsible for daily animal care in accordance with applicable laws and regulations. Duties include changing cages and racks, delivering food and water according to established procedures, maintaining equipment and animal housing areas following standard operating procedures and federal/state regulations, and performing record-keeping tasks such as per-diem records, animal health surveillance, feed logs, temperature/humidity charts, animal receipt and disposition logs, and other assigned duties. Care is provided for multiple species of laboratory animals housed in various research facilities throughout San Francisco.

Under the direction of the Animal Resources Supervisor or assigned lead, the Animal Technician performs all duties within the scope of the Assistant Animal Technician role. Responsibilities include identifying, remedying, and reporting issues immediately, ensuring proper animal care and use, and performing technical procedures required to support research efforts.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • 1 year of animal handling or laboratory animal sanitation equipment operations experience required.
  • Ability to communicate animal health information to appropriate personnel and maintain accurate, legible records.
  • Basic computer and email skills required.
  • General knowledge of feeding, caging, and space requirements for multiple laboratory animal species used in biomedical research.
  • Ability to identify animal health concerns and regulatory compliance issues and report conditions to veterinary staff, researchers, and compliance personnel.
  • Knowledge of disinfection, sanitation, and cleaning agents; ability to use cage washers and autoclaves for sterilization of cages.
  • General knowledge of federal and other regulatory agency requirements.
  • Ability to follow instructions and work independently or collaboratively.
  • Ability to scan cage barcodes, submit electronic reports, complete online training, and manage electronic timesheets.
  • Ability to comply with workplace rules, including no eating, drinking, or smoking in animal areas.
  • Ability to bend, squat, kneel, stand, reach overhead, and move on hard surfaces for extended periods.
  • Ability to wear required personal protective equipment daily.
  • Ability to push, pull, move, and lift heavy objects up to 50 pounds safely.

Education, Training, and Experience:

  • High school diploma/GED plus completion of training equivalent to the Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician certification and one year of animal care experience; OR
  • High school diploma/GED and two years of animal care experience with relevant animal species; OR
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience.
Schedule:
  • 07:30 AM - 04:30 PM.
