The Radiation Therapist 1 communicates effectively with patients, families, medical staff, healthcare team members, supervisors and outside contacts. Responsible for treatment modalities and protocols to accurately set-up and administer treatments on a daily basis. Verifies the proper functioning of linear accelerators, simulators and Computed Tomography machines.

Job Responsibilities

  • Communicates with families, physicians or other healthcare team members in anticipation of special needs of patients and/or families in a timely manner to facilitate effective treatment of patients; Demonstrates collaboration in communication with team members while being open to feedback and receptive to change.
  • Provides education and support of methods appropriate to patients' levels of understanding and motivation while including families and caregivers in education and training as appropriate.
  • Positions all patients for initial treatment to verify set-up; Verifies beam directional devices, ancillary aids and blocking via record and verification systems on machines and patients' computerized treatment plans before initiation of radiation beam; Maintains accurate records of daily treatments and other records as required.
  • Acts as a Liaison between physicians and machine staff by utilizing technical expertise for all difficult/complex treatments on various machines.
  • Documents any corrections in charts resulting from changes in the originally prescribed course of treatment; Detects unsatisfactory set-up and/or errors and resolves/reports to physicians.
  • Ensures that portal verification films are taken at appropriate intervals. Recognizes the need for adjustments in treatment ports when comparing simulation/portal films or patient positions; Performs daily quality assurance on linear accelerators, simulator and Computed Tomography machines to verify accurate output of designated parameters. Records findings and reports erratic operations of equipment.
  • Verifies operation of emergency shut offs and interlocks; Participates or provides assistance with in-vivo dosimetry measurements and special dosimetry. Attends department in-services/conferences and meetings.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of department treatment modalities and protocols in scheduling, set-up and treatment of patients; Keeps abreast of new technology in field of practice and assists in the development of new techniques, participation in research projects and/or educational activities.
  • May perform additional duties as assigned.

Certification - Basic Life Support upon start; American Registered Radiologic Technologist certified or registry eligible within one year of employmentLicensure - Licensed Radiologic Technologist is only required for team members in ambulatory areas; such as PROCExperience - None RequiredEducation - Associate's degree
