The Quality Assurance Analyst and Manager, Railcar Inspection ("QARI") Mexico is responsible for monitoring the manufacturing and Quality Assurance processes throughout all phases of railcar production, as well as, performing final inspections of tank cars and freight cars. The position will also have supervisory responsibility for one new Railcar Inspector in Mexico.

GATX, one of the largest railcar leasing companies in the world takes delivery of up to 3,000 new railcars per year and the "QARI" efforts are intended to maximize GATX's procured railcar quality, value, and reliability from Mexico manufacturing plants while meeting GATX and customer requirements.

This is a corporate hire, but the work will be located in Mexico. Time will be split between Monclova and Sabinas, and the incumbent will be required to be in one of these facilities 5 days a week.



Responsibilities

    Perform in-process inspections throughout all phases of manufacturing and conduct final inspections of railcars prior to shipment.
  • Ensure railcar quality and workmanship meet required standards; partner with the manufacturer to address nonconformances and drive continuous improvement.
  • Participate in specification and drawing review meetings.
  • Document, report, and track quality issues and nonconformances as they arise to ensure builder adherence to quality standards.
  • Finalize acceptance of railcars for shipment.
  • Coordinate with customer inspectors and facilitate customer visits, as needed.
  • Meet and collaborate with the railcar manufacturing support team (including plant management and Quality Assurance) to ensure adherence to builder/engineering specifications and GATX and customer requirements.
  • Audit QA documentation to confirm it is accurate, current, and being followed; verify the physical railcar matches supporting records.
  • Work with Manufacturing and Quality Assurance to bring defects into compliance and complete required rework.
  • Observe safe work practices in a heavy-industry environment in compliance with GATX and railcar supplier manufacturing plant safety policies.
  • Represent GATX's interests and interact daily with railcar manufacturing personnel at all levels and across departments, including Production and Quality Assurance.


Qualifications

  • Minimum of 5 years freight railcar manufacturing experience
  • Quality Assurance and railcar inspection experience within a railcar manufacturing plant
  • Knowledge of railcar types and components and ensuring compliance with engineering standards, industry standards, and customer requirements
  • Weld inspection experience, AWS CWI training (certification preferred)
  • Railcar interior and exterior coatings experience (NACE certification preferred)
  • NDT performance and evaluation experience
  • Current passport or ability to obtain passport if required.
  • Ability to read and write and communicate effectively in Spanish and English.
  • Read and interpret documents such as specifications, blueprints/drawings, and Quality Assurance reports
  • Ability to use Microsoft Excel, Word, and Email

Other (i.e., physical requirements, travel, etc. that is not covered above):

  • The "QARI" will live in Mexico and reside within commuting distance of a base railcar manufacturing location in Northern Mexico such as Monclova or Sabinas and will need to be at those locations daily.
  • Inspection - Visual evaluation and dimensional measurement, as required, including use of inspection equipment (weld gauges, mil gauges, etc.)
  • Physical activity - Walking throughout railcar manufacturing facilities indoors and outdoors within heavy industry environment including inherent tripping and fall hazards. Climbing on, under, and into railcars both during and after construction including standing or kneeling for car inspections.
