As an Underwriter with American Family Insurance, you will be working in a second-level role in the underwriter job family. You will apply knowledge regarding products, underwriting guidelines, systems and processes specific to products. You will underwrite risk (i.e., selection/rejection of new and renewal business). Analyze quality and quantity of risks underwritten and prepares reports accordingly. Review new applications and in-force business with higher degrees of risk not processed by automated systems. You may review agency books of business as well as profit/growth results and trends to recommend and implement action plans. May specialize in one or more products within commercial, farm/ranch, life or personal lines product areas. With progression in job family, top levels focus on leading projects that support underwriting operations initiatives.

In this Hybrid role, you will spend 50% of your time (10 days a month) working from office, proximate to one of our office locations (within approximately 35-50 miles). Madison, WI 53783; St. Joseph, MO 64507; Phoenix, AZ 85034, Minneapolis, MN 55305.

Compensation may vary based on the job level and your geographic work location. Relocation support is offered for eligible candidates.

Primary Accountabilities

*Must have 2 years of Property and Casualty insurance experience
*Apply insurance and risk concepts to underwrite new business for basic and/or less complex products. Depending upon product, underwriter may re-underwrite based upon policy guidelines.
*Evaluate profit factors in area of responsibility.
*Establish rapport with agents and sales management in their area of operation. Serves as a resource for the field force and sales management.
*Identify when reinsurance may be required.
*Escalate more complex risk to experience team members or manager for guidance.
*May apply reinstatement and rate reconsideration guidelines on inforce policies.
*Perform risk assessment that aligns with established actuarial pricing and rate class guidelines.
*Establish rapport with agents and sales management to deliver adverse decisions, explain the action, and determine if medical information is confidential or sensitive. Able to explain adequately to the agent without disclosing protected health information.
*Serve as a resource for the field force and sales management.
*Handle more complex risk situations with less dependence on others or manager for guidance.
*Act of subject matter expert on corporate projects, training and mentoring of staff.

Specialized Knowledge & Skills Requirements
*Demonstrated experience providing customer-driven solutions, support or service.
*Increased underwriting experience in area of expertise (specific products or line).
*Solid knowledge and understanding of insurance, underwriting guidelines, and risk concepts in area of expertise.
*Solid base knowledge of anatomy and pathophysiology to review medical records and conduct impairment research (if required by area of expertise).
*Demonstrated problem-solving and analytical skills.
*Demonstrated experience making independent decisions regarding underwriting cases.
*Solid knowledge understanding of lean methodologies and A3 problem solving.
