POSITION SUMMARY

Repairs, rebuilds, constructs and maintains interior and exterior wood components using hand and power tools.

Qualifications

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

* Repairs, rebuilds, and constructs stations, platforms, structure and buildings.

* Maintains railroad footwalks, stairways, hand railings planking, fences, salt boxes, shelters, shanties, etc., using creosote treated wood or plastic composite materials.

* Constructs wooden forms for concreting sidewalks, curbs and machine foundations.

* Repair/replace overhead doors.

* Installs/replaces hardware e.g. locks, handles, knobs, etc.

* Performs duties relative to roofing, studding, decking, drywalls construction.

* Repairs and erects all wooden station, roadway and crossing signs.

* Directs laborers assigned to assist the carpenter.

* Performs other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

* Must pass a physical examination and perform the physical activities associated with this position.

* Must pass applicable tests.

* Must have a valid driver's license and drive a CTA work van.

* Must possess five years of verifiable work experience as a construction carpenter or have completed a 5 year apprenticeship.

* Must have field experience in construction of the various types of concrete forms including the setting of templates, screeds, batter boards, etc.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

* Required to lift and carry and maneuver materials, tools, etc. weighing up to 80 pounds.

* Required to work in kneeling, crouched positions for extended periods of time.

* Must wear a respirator when working in the interior and in areas where pollutants are present.

* Strength in standing of which the majority of job duties is performed standing, walking to obtaining materials, and sitting of which the nature of work activities do not recognize seated posture, lifting up to 100 lbs.-carrying and lifting plywood, drywall, lumber, etc., pushing and pulling carts with materials, tools, etc.

* Must be able to climb up and down structures, ladders, catwalks, up & down roofs, platforms, and balancing when laying out walls, decks, platform structures. Must be able to stoop and kneeling, when working on flooring, stairs, roofs and footwalks, and stairs, crouching when installing baseboard and crawling when nailing floors and platforms.

* Must be able to reach when unloading trucks, selecting materials form the storerooms, e.g. lumber and supplies, handling when operating hand tools, nailing sawing wood, fingering when ascertaining wood finishes, drywall smoothness, placing nails, screws, etch and feeling when aligning complex wood forms.

* Must be able to talk when instructing assigned carpentry laborers & co-workers and hear when working near moving rail cars, e.g. on platforms, decks, etc. to hear vehicles.

* Must be able to see near when following schematics, diagrams, or blueprints, far to see signals for moving rail cars, rail crossing signals, etc. and have color vision when assessing train movement through colored signals.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

* Must possess a thorough knowledge of all phases of carpentry work and the various types of lumber used in repairing and constructing wooden structures.

* Must be skilled in the use of various types of hand and power operated tools.

* Must be proficient in arithmetic operations including fractions, decimals and percentages.

* Required to read and interpret blueprints.

WORKING CONDITIONS

* Environment involves work performed indoors about one half the time and work performed outdoors one half the time.

* Exposed to extreme cold when work performed outdoors in the winter.

* Exposed to extreme heat when work performed outdoors in the summer.

* Exposed to wet and/or humid when work performed outdoors in rain.

* Exposed to noise from rail, bus, or vehicular traffic esp. on expressways.

* Exposed to mechanical and electrical hazards when using circular saws, power sanders,

* Exposed to mechanical and electrical hazards when using circular saws, power sanders, and 600 VDC rail, burn hazards from creosote burns in warm weather, chemical hazards from solvents, creosote, thinners and reducers and heights when working on structure, on roof and catwalks.

* Exposed to atmospheric conditions such as fumes from working with cleaning fluids and glues, odors from creosote, thinners, solvents, etc., dust from saw dust from cutting wood, mist mostly from aerosol-paints, preservatives, solvents, gases from exhaust from gas powered tools, e.g. chainsaws.

* Works at heights up to 70 feet.

* Tools utilized by Carpenters.

Rate to be determined by applicant's entered service date and service date in union jurisdiction of this classification.
